Breast feeding troubles

Anyone else struggling with breast feeding? Today my baby has been so fussy and I’m just not sure he’s really getting much from me. He’s literally sucking and swallowing for about a minute each time. I’m so worried my supply is rubbish!

Do you have a breast pump. When I started breastfeeding, I didn't know if my baby was having enough milk, and so I expressed just to see how much milk I'll produce. Seeing the amount of milk I got from expressing gave me the confidence that my baby was having sufficient milk x

How old is your baby? We've found my daughter took a while to persevere past the first bits of milk, she'd just fall asleep within a minute as well. We had to find the right balance between getting her on the boob the moment we saw her initial feeding cues (she'd lose interest too quickly) and before she got too hungry. Your supply will typically catch up with what your baby needs, so try not to worry and keep putting him on the boob! In the meantime it might help to pump ☺️

The more you feed the easier it becomes. Make sure you’re getting enough to eat and drink as well and just keep offering. In the beginning it feels like they need feeding 24/7 but it will calm down and regulate eventually x

I felt like this too initially, what day are you on? Does he have wet and dirty nappies? That’s a really good sign he’s getting what he needs! They’re learning to feed just like we are, keep going! Also did your ward offer you an infant feeding team number? Mine really helped me!

@Laura Isi yes and I only ever really get about 1oz from it so that makes me concerned

@Cat he’s 4weeks. Yes am pumping about 5 x a day! Just doing what I can!

@Danni he’s four weeks old. Yes getting lots of wet nappies but now topping up with formula as just lacking so much confidence

@Melissa thank you! I needed to read this!

🤗 🤗 I have found Lucy Webber’s page so helpful x

@Melissa maybe keeping baby at breast for as long as he wants whether he’s feeding or not is the best thing?!

That’s what I did! They nurse for so many reasons other than hunger x

Ow, I really think by the sounds of it you’re doing amazing and don’t necessarily need to top up! Maybe to ease your anxieties go to a children’s centre to weigh him in and see how you’re doing? I would also speak to midwives/ lactation specialists, if you’re worried x
