Insomnia since having baby

I’ve developed insomnia since having baby and have such bad anxiety at bedtime. Lo is a great sleeper at night but I just cannot sleep! Have resorted to sleeping tablets … tried tonight to not taking one and my heart is racing!! Has anyone got any suggestions? We go outside each day for a walk , I try not to use my phone before bed cut out caffeine after 12pm nothing helps! I’m going mad and don’t want to have to keep relying on tablets!

Its so hard isnt it! Could you try meditating or listening to a calming podcast in bed?

@CeeCee I’ll try that tomorrow night although I feel all relaxed and sleepy then as soon as I try to sleep my heart just races

I know this may sound very left wing, but perhaps therapy? Our psychological state dictates our physical health and vice versa. So perhaps you’re not realizing how much anxiety you’ve got at the moment (new baby - you have to power through a lot, right?) and it builds up. You may feel like it’s coming from nowhere, there’s nothing particular worrying you at the moment, but your body is reacting like it’s under great stress. It becomes more noticeable at night, because it’s quieter, and you expect to be sleeping but can’t.

I’m same. Rarely go to bed before 1/2am myself. Sometimes later & t’s killing me. And she’s sleeping, don’t know why don’t / can’t just go to sleep at decent time when she is (which is usually latest up by 10pm with her). So I feel your pain! Also get anxious and do my overthinking / worrying at night too. But am under load of stress with home move & father of my LO (who’s not in picture but sorting out the financials) & constantly feeling guilty my two dogs don’t get as much of what they need that they used to sad :(. Are you stressed? like the other poster above mentioned. I’ve always been an insomniac and only really been better at it when have another person (adult) in the house. But it’s been quite a life long thing for me annoyingly. Just had to take a sleeping tablet myself, so hoping I go to sleep soon. Hope it gets better for you, as I know it’s a vicious cycle not sleeping well espesh when you’ve got the next morning with baby to be all alert and doing everything

@Lidia you might be right, I’ve downloaded some apps for breathing will try tonight! Thank you x

@Emma I think subconsciously I am extremely stressed , my partner works stupid hours in the week and weekend which is causing friction for us too! I just don’t know how to get out of this mind space 😫

Have you considered referring yourself to mental health services? I’m with them at the moment due to low mood and anxiety and honestly talking to them has really helped. And I got help so quickly! And they’re so supportive honestly I couldn’t recommend it enough. I also have developed insomnia and I can’t sleep at night hence why I’m awake at 11:47pm lol and I don’t feel tired at all 🙈 definitely reach out lovely. You’ve got to look after yourself so you can look after your baby ❤️
