Baby boy combi fed now refusing breast

Has anyone else had this? My baby boy was born two weeks early and I had no supply yet! I pumped A LOT and we finally got pretty well established with breastfeeding, but topped up with bottles. He just didn’t ever seem to be getting enough. He’s now twelve weeks & 3 days & has just started to refuse the breast in the last 48 hours. Just screams and screams until he’s given a bottle! I imagine this is a touch of laziness! He knows he can down a bottle more easily. Has anyone else had this experience? I’d really like to breastfeed a bit longer. For nutritional reasons, plus I’ve really fallen in love with it more than I thought I would! I’ve read that nipple shields can work for encouraging him back to the breast? Of course, stopping the bottles would probably do it but I genuinely don’t think I can bear the screams of hunger.

What size teat did you have him on?

I heard babies like to nurse while asleep. Try offering breast at midnight.

@anon stayed on the MAM size 1’s… he guzzles already! Changing to the next one up I figured would make him even lazier on the breast!

Please update us whether you were able to get him to breast again. Thanks. Best wishes to you!

I use Tommee Tippee size 1 and it barely even drips out the bottle so it shouldn't be a flow preference 🤔 Maybe try a size 0 to slow him further

Swap to Mam size 0 extra slow flow new born , it’s a massive difference from Mam 1’s that still comes quite fast, and yea mam brand shields are also similar to the bottle teat so should ease him back on but remove them half way into a feed because my LO got stuck on them at 4 weeks while I was still combinfeeding & then EBF from 6 weeks onward until I weaned him off them at 11 weeks. TMy LO was being lazy too, I swapped to size 0 and saw a big difference also ensure u pace feed with the bottle don’t leave teat full 100% of the time. X

So he’s done three days of breast refusal, and then this morning happily breast fed for half an hour! I’ve pumped to keep supply up but then he’s gone back to refusing this afternoon. I’ll persist a bit longer and see where we’re at next week.

So it’s been a week and he still refuses most of the time, but twice now has happily breast fed for 20-25 minutes! Really strange. I am expressing thought to give with the formula.
