Do I need to switch doctors?

Please help! I didn’t think anything was out of the ordinary but I’m also a first time mom. My daughter had her 6 months check up (and all others leading up to that point) and the doctor did the typical exam (pulse etc) and administered vaccines. However, they didn’t check for milestones like rolling over or holding a toy etc. They asked me questions about my baby but didn’t do any actual observations themselves. Someone else told me recently that their doctor physically brings toys for the baby to play with to check for grasping and rolling over and other milestones. Is my doctor atypical? Are we missing something crucial? Or is this no big deal? Any advice helps. Thank you!!!!!🙏

I don’t think it’s typical for them to actually check ! Most just ask the parents if they are doing those things or if they have any concerns about meeting milestones

That sounds like my daughters pediatrician appts. We also saw an occupational therapist several times with her and the OT therapist would bring put the toys and check milestones and whatnot.

Yes on occupational therapist should be checking those things to know where the child is at and what they need to work on But not necessarily a general pediatrician unless there are concerns and then at that point they would probably refer you to a specialist like a physical or occupational therapist

For the first 4 months my daughter's OG pediatrician always checked milestones, but then her doctor changed and he didn't check milestones but my daughter was sitting up really well at her appointment and I brought toys for her to play with, so he knew she was doing really well. I think if you have any concerns let them know? But at this point they know your baby is developing and each baby is at different stages and as long as they are healthy that's all that matters.

the only milestone my baby’s doctor checked was if he was holding his head up to see if he was ready for solids but it was more-so an observation since i was holding him in my lap while he was holding his own head up

i wouldn’t personally switch unless u don’t like the doctor or if you’ve expressed concerns of baby not reaching milestones and they fail to check or suggest remedies to help baby reach said milestones

Ours just asked us questions, they didn’t observe him with toys or rolling etc

@Bianca yes I agree ! Honestly as a nurse I feel like it would be hard to find a doctor who is going to check every milestone etc . That’s just not the norm ! Could you imagine how long it would take to get through all their patients if they did this ? It’s just not really realistic so I wouldn’t judge if your doctor is “a good doctor “ or not based on this Plus honestly we can usually tell a lot by just looking at the child / posture . Are they holding their head up are they tracking voices , making eye contact , sitting up in mom’s arms , muscle tone etc …

Ours is the same, just questions. And not a lot. They mainly ask if we have concerns so I'm following a few online lists I found. US has free one on CDC and I have a UK one I believe from some YouTuber

I don't think there's anything to worry about unless you personally don't like your pediatrician. I have a 12 year old son and a 7 month old son and with both none of their pediatricians ever brought in toys or things to look at their developmental milestones. They do and should be asking questions which I read you stated. I do know if you see an occupational therapist they will do most of that type of stuff with them so maybe consider that if you are worried about any of your child's milestone developments. It also never hurts to ask these types of questions with your pediatrician as well. Maybe they can answer your question as to why they don't see that necessary. ❤️

My doctor has had me fill out forms that ask those types of questions, they’ve never had my LO do the milestones for their observation.

My sense is that my pediatrician sees a lot of babies so when my daughter and son have had their check ups, she’s watching them closely to see how they are doing in relation to milestones etc. bc of that, she’s asks us some questions but others I think she can just see for herself (ie head control, eye contact, using hands etc)
