Scans

Hello! I feel like this is a stupid question but i keep seeing so many posts and comments about growth scans and babies size but how are you getting those/finding out?? Im 31 weeks and haven’t really been measured at any of my appointments so have no idea what kind of size he is but id love to know. I feel like my bump is quite big. Is it a case of just asking the midwife next time i see her?

I'm getting 3 extra scans due to my last labor and my BMI. My 32 week frowtch scan in on Monday my last two midwife appointments she's not wanted to measure me mmbecause I'm getting these scans which I think personally is unprofessional because my last trust measured me regardless. Even my consultant measured me at 29 weeks. Seems some skip it

Different trusts works on different systems, but you should be getting your bump measured at midwife appointments going forward for your fundal growth chart. If you are measuring small / big, then you’d be referred for extra scans where they’ll check baby’s actual size rather than just your bump. Got my first one tomorrow because bump has been off the charts for two appointments consistently x

You should be measured at every appointment starting from your 28W appointment by your midwife (this used to be 26W and still is in some places, but most do 28W now). If your midwife measures you and thinks your bump is too small or too big she’ll refer you for a growth scan to double check :) People can also get growth scans if they have things like gestational diabetes or other issues where they wanna keep an eye on baby’s progress. But yeah, 100% bring this up to your midwife and ask why you haven’t been measured yet and make sure she measures you from this point on at each appointment. A handy guide to appointments and what to expect is on the NHS site here: https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/your-pregnancy-care/your-antenatal-appointments/

@Sam it’s not unprofessional she won’t measure you, it’s just because it would be pointless for her to do so if you’re having growth scans :) basically bump measurements are just a rough outline and scans are much more accurate (though still of course not super accurate). So any bump measurement she enters or takes would be discounted and totally overridden by your growth scan measurements, so it would just be a little redundant for her to measure that’s all :)

You should have a 32 midwife appointment and you can ask them to measure? I've had growth scans every 2 weeks since 27wks so when I had my 28wk midwife she said she didn't need to. Growth scans are booked for various reasons so ask her as you would like to know the measurements. I thought I was big but apparently I'm average 🤷‍♀️

I would ask the midwife when I next see her yes, you should be getting measured at your next midwife app. I'm getting extra scans every 4 weeks because my daughter was small.

I’ve had 4 growth scans and got another in 2 weeks. 3 following a low bump measurement. The 32 and 36 were planned due to low bmi. All scans show she’s in the 70th Centile (where as bump I’m on 3rd). Your midwife should have done a tape measurement of the bump by now? If you’re on the chart correctly then no need to scan.

It's usually to do with what percentile your bump is measuring on I've a growth scan this evening because my little girl has gone from 50th percentile on last measurements to over a hundred yesterday its all a bit confusing x

I have growth scans because I have gestational diabetes so they're monitering baby, but usually if you're not having growth scans the midwife measures your fundamental height with a paper tape measure from around 28/30 weeks. X

I had a growth scan at 28 weeks and I have another one at 31/32. I'm getting a lot of scans as I'm on Consultant Lead Care

I am high risk pregnancy and consultant lead for my care so had growth scans booked in but I had reduced movement so they booked one a bit earlier.

It’s usually in high risk pregnancies or those with previous issues in pregnancy. I am getting growth scans as my daughter was born with IUGR. Sometime after 20 weeks she stopped growing which went undetected until birth. She was born at 41+6 weighing 5lb and was below the lowest centile on the chart (plotted as 0.0%). So this time they’ve given me extra growth scans at 32 and 36 weeks. You should have a growth chart in your notes and both the estimated weight at the scans plus have your fundal height measured by your midwife on your chart. They didn’t measure my fundal height until my 32 week midwife appointment x
