Flying with car seat

I am flying with my 17 month old soon on a long haul flight, he has his own seat, because of this I have to take a car seat onboard for him to sit in. Has anyone else done this before? I’ve also been told there’s a harness option instead of the car seat but I don’t know which is the best choice?

Can’t he just sit in the seat of the plane?

You don’t HAVE to take the car seat onboard because he has a seat. My toddler has never flown with her chair seat even when under 2 in her own seat. They do need to lap sit for takeoff and landing (for evacuation and safety reason) but you don’t need your seat onboard. It gets checked in at the gate or at checkin and put under.

You don’t need to take a car seat but if you are taking a car seat on you trip then for ease and comfort of child sitting down you could take the car seat on the airplane if it fits the seat dimensions BUT if you are not do not worry you do not need one on the flight

can i ask how you managed to get him his own seat?? did you pay for the sit or simple request it as its a long haul?? im travel in a couple of weeks its wud be great is my 14 month cud have her own seat

I paid for the seat yes. However British airways have said because he is under 2 he needs to be sat in a car seat or with a special harness provided by the airline

@Sarah I was told I need a car seat or an amsafe system which is a harness because he is under 2 and in his own seat

@Sarah was this BA?

That was BA. Same rules with Qatar, Delta and Cathay Pacific.

@Sarah I was told on the phone differently so I’m so confused! Did they provide the harness for you? And was this a recent flight? I’m worried about not turning up with a car seat and them not letting us fly

Yeah she flies every month with them. Now she’s 2 she doesn’t get the harness, she just uses the normal seatbelt but they count boarding babies and come give you the belt before the safety brief 🙂

@Sarah wow ok that’s great. The woman on the phone was so rude and told me it’s mandatory for him to have a seat. Are you flying long haul? Perhaps it’s different for long haul flights. Thanks for your help, much more helpful than the BA worker !

BA customer service reps though are trash, don’t worry about them. I flew tons with her under 2 and never had an issue xx

@Sarah Ah okay brilliant. Thank you! I also thought the same, never seen a car seat onboard.
