NHS Scans

Does anyone know how many scans you get? From my NHS app it’s telling me I’ve got my 20 week scan coming up and that’s it. So is it really only the 12 week and 20 week scan??? Do I just give birth after that?!!? That’s scary….

Yes those are the only two scans you will have. As long as all is ok during both of your scans there isn't really a medical need for them to scan you again x

You get two scans unless you are high risk or of risk then you get 3-4 extra scans and growth scans xx

Those are all you get unless you require extra scans but that's normally if you're under a consultant x

You only get 2 scans but at your midwife appointments after the 2nd scan they’ll use a Doppler to listen to baby’s heartbeat here & there & measure baby by checking on your bump, pressing down etc & writing measurements down each time, this will help to keep track of baby growing. If baby isn’t growing to their measurements you’ll get given an emergency scan. Also, you’ll be able to feel baby kick/move from 20+ weeks so this will also help with noticing if baby is doing okay. If you start to feel reduced movement or none then they’ll do emergency scans for you (all of these were done during my 1st pregnancy)

I’ve got an extra one at 32 weeks due to my placenta being low at my 20 week scan

Just so you’re not disappointed not all trusts use doppler, my first baby it never happened and I don’t think that has changed x

Also to add to madeleines comment, they won’t always give you a scan for reduced movements. Normally they just pop you on a monitor till the machine said you passed, it’s very rare they’ll send you for a scan

Usually you get 3 dating scan, 18/20 week scan and 36 weeks. They put you on a pathway which will tell you how many scans you get. But sometimes in depends on the hospital trust like my area is definitely 3 unless they need more xxx

@Natalya unless it’s a thing done in London & Birmingham but even my sils were given extra scans for reduced movements & they’re in different hospitals to me x

@Tasnim I got one growth scan for reduced movements but that was after going in multiple times with them. And then I got another one at 36/37 weeks because I got induced at 38 because I was going in every two days to get monitored by their request and they weren’t happy with his movements

@Natalya I guess it makes sense coz it’s probably costly for them but I do wish they gave pregnant women more scans just for their peace of mind. It’s scary when you’re just having to rely on your intuition till you give birth

@Tasnim I reckon they should give you one around 32/36 weeks as a general growth scan

@Natalya I get more scans this pregnancy as I’m considered overweight to them this time round so I’ve got one in jan & one in February & my 20 week one is next week as I had to change it

@Tasnim I get growth scans every couple of weeks I think it’s every 4ish weeks, because I have an autoimmune disease I’ve got a really high risk of premature birth and low birth weight! I go to see my consultant about it today ironically!

@Natalya are growth scans the same scan method as the 3/5 month scans? Hope everything goes well in your pregnancy & you’re blessed with a healthy baby 🤞🏼

@Tasnim yes! They measure baby and make sure blood flow is good through the cord, and double check all their important parts! And thank you, you too!

during my first pregnancy with UCL i had 2 scans 12 &20 weeks, and ended up with forceps due to big and back to back baby with cord around neck. Complications would have been prevented with a third scan 🥲 With the second, now I’m offered 3 12, 20 and 36 weeks
