Petite babies, is she underweight???

Hi Momma... I need some reassurance and encouragement that everything is alright. My little girl is on the 9th percentile... her birth weight was 2.606 kgs and last weigh in 21 days ago (at 6 weeks) she was 4.1kgs. I give her breast milk via bottle and 1 bottle of formula daily. I'm doing everything to try to increase my milk supply, and I'm just currently exhausted. I think her weight is starting to trouble my husband and he, unaware, passes that stress onto me. She eats well, of great health... not doing poorly or anything like that. She is meeting her development milestones... her weight just concerns us. Should I increase her formula to two bottles a day to aid increase her weight? Positive advise please... no judgement.

You're doing amazing! In 6 weeks you've nearly doubled her birth weight. That's incredible! Does your GP or health visitor have any concerns? My little one is 25th centile for weight according to her book. At 6 weeks she was 4kg. As long as baby is gaining weight at each weigh in, I wouldn't be worried. Some babies are going to be petite. Some are gonna be bigger than average . It's how life is.

My baby was 9th percentile whe he was born, followed that trend with all weight visits from health visitor. I was also worried about milk supply and feeding enough too. I recommend weighing her - i go to a local hub with community midwives once a fortnight. It was great for my peace of mind - that and plenty of wet nappies. He's 12weeks now and has increased to 25th percentile, from 6wks -12wks he's had lots of growth spurt, so you may be surprised when you weigh her

@Claire No concerns expressed by GP or health visitor. Thank you for the reassurance

@Ruby, I've recently moved boroughs and have a health visitor coming over on Monday - hope to use that session to get a weighing and see how things stand. With the feeding, this is tricky as it is baby led and it becomes difficult to 'force feed' baby. Also, overfeeding comes with an extra set of issues such as constant reflux. I will consider getting her weight taken every 2 weeks. Thanks for sharing your experience.

9th centile literally isn’t anything to be worried about? They should only have concerns if she’s dropped more than 1 full centile/ isn’t really following her curve. Mine is below the 9th, has been since birth. She’s following her curve just fine (between the 2nd and 9th) and there have been no concerns. She’s 10 weeks.

I agree you’re doing amazing! My baby is on the 9th too and has been since birth. He had his first jabs yesterday and doctor weighed him and she reassured me that longs they don’t drop it’s absolutely nothing to worry about. My partner is very slim so I think baby will take after him! Longs baby seems content after feeds, lots of wet nappies and follows their curve there’s nothing to worry about x

@Allie had our health visitor come in today and she came in at 4.7kgs today. You are correct... she is growing within her percentile and not dropping weight. I also had to reassure my husband that if we just ignore how other babies are growing... she is actually doing amazing in her own little path. Thanks for the words of encouragement and providing a different perspective

@Elle same, husbands side of the family is thin... I actually reminded my husband of this. He has made peace with her petite size and understands that she is progressing great in her lane. I mean, it's not like we can force feed her. Thanks for sharing your experience and insights.
