Sciatic pain

Hi all, I’ve got awful shooting pains down my right butt/leg. How I imagine sciatica to feel. I called the midwife who brushed it off as “normal” and kinda gave me “get on with it and stop being dramatic" vibes. but I can barely walk! Sitting and lying also hurt a lot. Has anyone else had this, and what did you do/would you recommend? (21 weeks)

Hiya I had this through most of my pregnancy and I started using a chiropractor in the 3rd trimester and she found out my hips were unaligned and tight so the weight of the baby was falling mainly onto one side so it was having to work harder as it didn’t have the other leg to support it. I’d definitely recommend going to a chiropractor and get them to do a consultation on you x

Chiropractor may help but I have no experience with it. I tried to stretch daily when mine was bothering me and that helped a lot. Now with 4th baby I don’t have much trouble with it at all

I had something similar and I paid to go to a chiropractor - she realigned my hips/ pelvis. I also self-referred online to see the NHS hospital physio - you’ll be fast tracked because you’re pregnant. You can do this yourself and don’t need your midwife to refer you. I was advised to do pregnancy yoga, use a birthing ball etc.. they said it could take 12 weeks to heal. Not much they’ll do tbh, but if you’ve had an appt at least it’s on your records should you have problems in future. X

If you contact your GP they can prescribe you stronger pain killers than paracetamol. I have this/PGP and got prescribed cocodamol which does help more. Would also recommend using an exercise ball to do some gentle stretches on like hip tilts and I quite like kneeling and leaning forward over it as I feel like it takes the baby’s weight off of whatever nerve they’re pressing on! Warm baths and hot water bottles are great for the pain too. And as difficult as it is it’s helpful to keep moving even if it’s just small walks around the house/your work place regularly because staying in one position too long also can make it worse.

Try sciatica exercises - doing them daily. I found some good ones online but also self referred to physio and she has given me plenty of movements to help. Be prepared for this to continue after pregnancy also so may be worth going down physio route. I had sciatica in first pregnancy, then it continued for 5 years after pregnancy, now I’m pregnant again and it’s much worse. Fun times.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I’ve been advised to get a pregnancy support belt too, has anyone found them helpful?

Unfortunately Iv only found them helpful when I’m walking round - have to take them off as soon as a sit down, driving etc as it digs in. They need to be tight enough to make a difference so obvs can’t bend in them well. But if you are on your feet then yes should help.

I had one and also used KT tape for my 3rd pregnancy. Standing up the support belt worked. It did dig in a bit when I sat down but was still manageable. I like the KT tape better and liked that I could leave it on for a couple days so I didn’t have to worry about one of my other kids running off with it like I did my support belt lol

Thanks everyone!
