Constipation

Is anyone else dealing with a constipated toddler? My 19 month old is very constipated. He poops every 2 days and screams bloody murder every single time. He usually gets anal fissures from how hard his poop is. I’ve asked his pediatrician for advice and they said to make sure he drinks enough water, limit whole milk, and give him powdered fiber. We’re doing all of these things and he is still very constipated.

Have you tried apple juice? Also try doing bicycle legs with him.

Hey momma! I’m a dietitian and also have a 19 month old! I’d encourage you to mix prunes into his yogurt or offer him them like apple sauce. That has really helped my daughter, we do this daily. Just the prunes in the baby food jars. We also make sure she eats lots of fiber: fruit, veggies, and whole grains. I also started mixing her milk with unsweetened oat milk, because it seemed whole was constipating her worse too. Also, she got scared to poop because it hurt so bad and was so hard. Our pedi recommended miralax. Start with 1 cap full until he poops daily without pain, then scale it back as needed!

Chia seeds, flax seeds, insoluble fiber like corn or green beans, pear or prune juice, warm baths, extra movement, extra water, yogurt. no white rice, white bread, bananas. Avoid too much meat. Leave skin on fruits like apples and tomatoes unless it’s a choking hazard. Carrots can be very helpful also

Sometimes if it regularly hurts them to poop they’ll avoid it because they’re afraid of it being painful which worsens the problem. Some children don’t realize they need to poop because they’re too busy playing and they hold it back. I personally didn’t use miralax because there are some studies that show concern for the mental affects of miralax in young children. You could ask your doctor about liquid suppositories but they can’t be used too often

+1 to prunes. My daughter has struggled with constipation for the longest time. She doesn’t do well any kind of dairy. I mix prunes in my daughter’s oatmeal or smoothies. Try giving more water. We also give her probiotics drops everyday and that helps with constipation a lot.

We dealt with horrible constipation like you’re talking about and prunes were never strong enough for us. I’d recommend some kind of magnesium powder you can stir into a drink for him. Personally the natural vitality CALM is what I would use, it uses magnesium carbonate. Otherwise you can try miralax but would definitely run it by your pediatrician first, and like Victoria said, I had concerns about the effects on my kiddo. If worst comes to worse we did use liquid glycerin suppositories a few times but that only clears the lower blockage and doesn’t aid in actually fixing the underlying problem. Good luck, I know how hard constipation is with a little one 😔

@Prat what probiotics do you use??

@Erika We’ve been giving her Biogaia Probiotic Drops with Vitmain D everyday

I dealt with this when my baby was about 10 months old, it was very painful and scary to see her struggle to poop. What I did then was give her Miralax 1 tsp a day in her milk for like a couple months. And that REALLY helped a lot. Now I give her probiotics and a multivitamin everyday, no more Miralax needed, and she poops up to 2x a day with no issue. I also make sure to give her lots of water and fiber rich foods throughout the day.

I did everything natural I could find, from herbs to food to probiotics. I'm scheduled to take her to GI on Wednesday to get to rhe root of her Constipation. Right now calm magnesium powder seems to be keeping her going, but not good enough. I did miralax for a week but I'm not doing that long term unless thr GI says it's the only way.
