Postpartum anxiety and insomnia

Has anyone experienced this and come out the other side? It’s really affecting my sleep and I just want to know if or how I can get better. I’m laying wide awake for hours at night desperate to sleep. I don’t actually feel like I’m particularly worrying about anything specific, but I just can’t switch off. Is there a cure and will it get better?

I had this after my last pregnancy. I found cutting out caffeine entirely helped, getting outside for a little walk in the fresh air each day and just trying to nap whenever possible. Lack of sleep definitely made my anxiety 10x worse. Easier said than done I know! I also did a course of CBT through a local service, GP or health visitor should be able to help you with what’s available in your area.

@Kelly thank you. Do you sleep better now?

Yes, I am postpartum again (only 2 weeks) so waiting to see if it hits me again. But hopefully I’ll avoid it this time!

Yes, I am experiencing this at the moment especially when my son is having trouble sleeping - if he wakes me up I struggle to fall back to sleep - medication helped me a lot

@Kelly congratulations! Hope you are ok

@ilenia what medication did you take?

Olanzepine - but it was really serious - I was sleeping no more than 2 hours per night. I am sure it’s not your case - but I would speak to your GP

I had, have pp anxiety /depression with my youngest. Currently take 50g sertraline. It’s helped so much! I also limit my caffeine!

Hello hope your okay I know how tough it can be so sending love ! I definitely did I had really bad anxiety especially at night and even though I’d be up feeding my son I couldn’t get back to sleep after. I did self refer to the NHS talking therapies and cause your postpartum they see you quite quickly. I did find this helped but I also feel it’s something I probably would have overcome in time as I adjusted to motherhood. I’m much better now and expecting baby number 2 😊 not to undermine it because it’s terrible but I think lots of people suffer with it so your not alone xx

Yes I had this! My baby slept through at 10 weeks too so was annoying. I read a book sleep CBT and the gist of what helped me was to actually not put any sleep aids in place - that keeps the cycle going and makes your brain feel like it needs things to get to sleep when actually sleep is an automatic process! So now I go on my iPad and do whatever I want and whilst yes I still have some more restless nights I wouldn’t define it as a problem.

@Rebecca oh thank you 💙 I’m 9 months pp I thought it would have got better by now… some nights I just can’t get back to sleep once I’ve had to get up for a wee… it’s so weird. My body just won’t let me go even though I’m tired. Good luck with everything!! X
