When should I start using product in my baby’s hair?

She is 4 months old with a mixture of type 3a, 3b and 4a hair I believe. The back gets really frizzy and dry in the mornings. Is she’s too young for a bonnet? I’ve just been using coconut oil and water but her hair still ends up dry in the morning. Any advise?

my daughters hair also gets DRY DRY in the back from her sleeping on her back. i don’t recommend coconut oil but rather a detangler, oil, & hair lotion of some sort to help seal in the moisture from the oil. also she can use a bonnet!! i try to use my daughters as much as possible but dont let her sleep in it unless you’re watching her due to suffocation

I also had this problem and I used to wet her hair with a spray bottle. Then I used Shea Moisture smoothie in the back. A little goes a long way. Her hair still got frizzy from sleeping on it but it was no longer dry.

Pictures of hair? Also extremely unlikely to have both 3a and 4a. Dry/frizzy doesnt equal type 4. Far too young for a bonnet and oil is not a moisteriser. Its a sealer. Unless she has a TONNE of hair she doesnt need anything at this age.

I think people should try not to default coconut oil. Almond and grapeseed and even avocado are much lighter and better for children that young. Also oil doesn’t add moisture. Maybe add a little leave in in the water spray bottle or add some Shea butter? Or change from an oil to Shea butter instead.

@Xahria ok I will try a detangler and hair lotion are there any brands that you recommend?

@Sarah ok perfect! Thank you!

@Wendi ok I’m going to ditch the coconut oil lol thank you!

I find that charts don’t work to much when it comes to products. Either your hair like heavy or light products. She’s also young so as her hair grows the type can change. I would suggest try something light and see how she responses and go up in heaviness based from there

Also look at videos and pictures of actual hair to help you ID the curls if you want.

@Sarah that is seriously much more helpful. Thank you!

@Wendi that is great advise. Thank you!

She still has 100% baby hair. Its not a "type" yet and trying to fit in into a category will drive u insane. My 4b/4c boy uses the same stuff as my 3c girl. He just has to use more. So hair type isnt always relevant. For your daughter at thus age id just find a good leave in/detangler and mix with water and mist each day. Id prob go for kinky curly knot today

@Gigi L ok that makes sense. Thank you for your insight

I use nala conditioner to help define the curls/ frizz. It’s worked really well so far, I found coconut oil didn’t do a thing and I’m trying to avoid using products when she’s still small. Worth trying as it’s all natural x

@Zee that’s exactly what I was looking for, all natural products. Thank you
