Constipation

My son is 4 months old he will be 5 months next week and for the past 2 days his diet hasn't changed he's strictly on formula but he's been very constipated he cries and he's pushing so hard that his little butt is so red and I feel so bad 😔😔 Picture of my boy for attention 💛

I usually give my baby prunes to help with constipation or even grape juice. And then I’ll give him tummy massages to help with digestion. If that hadn’t worked we would’ve modified the formula and gone on a plant based formula since families on both sides have issues with dairy but fortunately prunes and grapes worked (:

Try sticking a thermometer up his rectum and see if that helps to encourage it any.

If nothing helps and he hasn’t poop in days I’ll suggest you take him to the ER. My daughter was constipated and they used a suppository and she pooped in minutes.

Yes, suppositories also help soooo much, u can get adult ones at Walmart and cut them down to where it’s small enough for him.

Try windi. It works so well. Just prepare for a mess.

You can massage his belly and do bicycles , that helped my baby , if not. I 100% recommend windi or a spoonful of beech nut prunes

He's so cute!! Is he passing any gas? If he isn't then I'd be a little more concerned. Any reflux or vomiting? You can add 1 oz of juice to his bottle, preferably apple or prune juice. Do this 1x a day. Can also do tummy massage in clockwise direction from RLQ to epigastric area and back down to the LLQ; rectal stim by inserting a thermometer tip with Vaseline into his rectum; bicycle kicks and crunches by pushing his feet to his abdomen in different directions. If it's been more than 4 days and none of this helped, call your pediatrician to ask about next steps. You might not need to go to the ER and can try the suppository at home. If those options don't work, ER is the next bet.

I switched formula to a sensitive easy to digest one and also give my baby probiotic drops every day. It took maybe 3-4 days to regulate him but now he is never constipated!!

@Daisy He was only like that for 2 days but he finally pooped but I felt so bad for him 🥺 I got him so pear juice because I read online it can help them but I should have gotten apple or prune I think

I used to give my son a few little sips of water a day when he was that young, obviously not too much as their body can’t handle it but it was a game changer for us here. Went from pushing hard, days without poop to pooping everyday/ a couple of times a day. Sometimes the formula can dehydrate them.

@Kara pear juice is fine too!! Anything that starts with a "p" is good to give
