Moving from Aus to UK…

Anon because I know someone in this group and our decision to move is not public knowledge yet! My husband and I have decided to move back to his home country of England. The family are all in the Southampton area so we’re headed back there. I’m Aussie and have lived in the UK before - but not with a Bub! Our daughter will be about 2yrs 3months old when we move. Is there anyone in here that has made the move from Aus to the UK? And if so, how did you go about enrolling into nursery school/school? Did you enroll before you moved, and how did you find the process? All tips helpful! Thank you!

I am thinking about the same! My partner is Australian and daughter is 20 months born in Melbourne. We went back last month to visit my family and I just realized we have so much more there than here! Not to mention that we can’t afford to buy a house here which unsettles me, but the uk is more affordable. ❤️

My partner and I have made the move from Aus to Bristol recently as my partner is from here. It has been ok! The worst part was my visa - I don’t have citizenship here and it cost me $10K for an ancestry visa because there’s an NHS contribution as part of the visa. Are you sorted for visas? I have an almost 4 year old and an almost 1 year old and we moved in June this year. We wanted a nursery spot for the eldest child and joined waiting lists for nurseries in our area (we knew where we were going to live). We hadn’t secured a space when we left but were happy to have both kids over the summer to enjoy some adventures. We heard in early Aug that we had a spot starting in Sep. We accepted as it was a well-reviewed place by ppl we knew. We were then offered another space at a different place but refused. I think there’s more capacity for 3 year olds though. I really rated the long non-stop Qantas flight from Perth. Felt like a very efficient way of doing it. Happy to discuss further!

I don’t fully understand how it works with nursery but we’re getting two and a bit days covered by the government.

Thank you Kathryn - this is so helpful! Did you need to have an address before you registered or was there a way around it? We’ll be renting but not sure of address yet, but can use my in laws one … but we don’t know if we’ll be renting in the same postcode etc. And yes - not sorted visa yet but know which one we’ll apply for and it’s going to cost a bomb. Worth it to be around family tho. We don’t yet have a date for the move but I’m trying to do as much research as possible around the more tricky things like school!

Also, did you register them in June or before you moved over? 😘
