What age did your child start showering instead of bathing? And also washing their own hair?

My daughter has 3b/3c hair so I’m specifically looking to hear from POC on when you taught your kids to shower and start caring for their own hair. Right now I wash it in the sink once a week because it’s easy for me to use the hose and ensure all products are washed out and it really hurts my back leaning over a bathtub to do both my kids wash days. But the oldest is 5 1/2 and I’m just curious if I should be started to teach her how to do it herself? I cannot imagine she would have the ability to right now lol she panics sometimes when water gets in her eyes but she also seems like she’s getting kinda big for the kitchen counter 😂😂

My nieces are 5&6, they have a very similar hair type and they have been showering since 3/4, HOWEVER, we still have to shampoo, conditioner, even tell them how to body wash while they are in. So they don’t shower independently, but it’s a lot easier than bathing lol.

My son didn't want to shower until at least 8

@Mia I might have to try that, maybe since we have one of those longer shower head things it might be easier too

@Laurie yeah I think I still have a year or two of baths ahead of me lol my kids like playing in their too, I was just so curious of when kids normally start showering cuz I can’t even remember when I did lol

My SS was showering by himself by 6 or 7. My daughter is still very young but curly hair needs more care so I think when she’s around middle school aged I would teach her how to wash and do simple styles. That’s around the time I started doing my own hair.

She’s beautiful btw ☺️

My mom was washing my hair until I decided I was ready to take over, probably around 8. But we only have a shower, so as soon as my kids outgrew the baby bath tubs, they started showering

@Brittany Wow her hair is so pretty 😍

@Haley 💚 makes sense! Right now my girls want to sometimes do their own hair and they start brushing out their curls and I’m like STOP😂😭😭

@Brittany so pretty :)

3.5 yo when he voluntarily wanted to do stand up shower. I monitor him from the outside in case he needs help/remind him to wash certain areas. Though, he isn’t a fan of washing his hair but he’s better w the help of a small towel over his eyes. This one has always been independent and wants to do things himself. While My 5.5 yo often follows the little one, started to shower standing himself as well.

Boys hair is such a breeze, I know. My niece showers standing herself at age 6.

My kids have showered alone since 3. They're not old enough to wash their own hair yet. Maybe by 7?

@Ella do you help them wash their hair from inside or outside the shower then? Maybe with one of those longer held held hoses it would be easier than I’m thinking lol

I shower my 4 years old and 2.5 year old. Both have curly hair. Nowhere near ready to do it alone.

@Autumn I just have a shower with them on hair wash day. Does your shower have the detachable hose?

@Autumn her hair is beautiful! 😍 Every kid will do things at their own pace, sounds like it’s time to start building independence though. I have my 4 year old wash her own body I just have to supervise her and wash her back.

i have a similar hair type but i didn’t start doing my own until i was like 10 😅 i remember showering from a very young age though. i would shower with my mom a lot

What is "3b/3c" hair? 🤔

My daughter's only 3.5 but we do a shower first and I wash her hair and then fill the tub and let her take a bath and then drain the water and another quick "shower" at the end to wash out the conditioner I let sit and get it completely wet again for me to brush and style it. I can't imagine her beginning to do anything for her hair anytime soon. One of the questions on the milestone charts at the pediatrician was about whether your child can brush their own hair and I was like um I don't think this question really works for POC.
