Thrush

My baby is 6 weeks old now and found out she has thrush. We were prescribed nystatin and I gave it to her as prescribed but here’s the issue.. ever since we started the medicine she’s been screaming like she’s in pain. Refusing the bottles and hardly sleeping. I’m thinking it’s making her tummy hurt really bad. I called her pediatrician and waiting to hear back but was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and been given a different medication? What worked for your babies?

She’s most likely screaming because thrush causes babies to feel pain. This happened to my sisters baby and she told me they gave her medicated wipes to clean her baby’s mouth with.

@Ayleen this is what I’m thinking. It’s just weird that it started after starting the medicine. I’ll ask about the wipes, thank you!

My baby was diagnosed with thrush at four weeks. I did not give the medicine as prescribed because 2 mL seem to be like too much medicine to me and if you read on Google, they’re not even supposed to swallow it. It’s supposed to be swished and spit out. It can be swallowed, but not preferred. On the first day, I tried 1 mL and I noticed irritability in my baby and maybe diarrhea? But her poop definitely changed. So what I started doing next dose was putting the medicine on a cloth and letting the medicine sit on her tongue while she kind of chewed the cloth. I would do this twice to ensure she got the medicine on her tongue and I wouldn’t even say I used a full milliliter anytime I gave her the doses And she’s doing fine now. She even let me wipe her tongue. Do what works for you, your baby and your family but this was just my experience

@Alleiah Thank you so much! Definitely will be trying this.

My baby got thrush and was prescribed Fluconazole. It was .75 of liquid meds and we did it for 14 days.

My baby has had thrush for so long, I just can’t get rid of it. We’ve been using the nystatin after every feeding. The current theory is that I haven’t been putting it far back enough on her tongue. She doesn’t seem to be in pain from it though, thankfully. FYI my doctor said the “2 ml” dosage for nystatin isn’t really relevant. They have to put a dosage for the pharmacy, but she said all that matters is that you make sure to rub in on all the surfaces of her mouth, which takes far less than 2 ml. I just use both sides of a qtip, although now I have upped it to 2 q tips because it’s been hanging around for so long

@Laura I just tried the q tip method this morning so my baby doesn’t swallow so much so hopefully that works. I hope you guys beat it soon. It’s a pain in the butt 😅
