Baby’s stomach being “big”

When I had my 20 week scan they told me that baby’s stomach is a little over the upper percentile. No body could tell me why this is concerning or give me any information at all but they have planned for me to have a gestational diabetes test. Has anyone else been told this at a scan please ?

My baby’s abdomen is off the chart😂 baby is just chunky! I wouldn’t worry, as measurements are always accurate. They’ll do a GD test to rule out you having GD because baby’s chubby, but mine always has been and I don’t have GD! Might just be blessed with a bigger baby! :)

I was told this at my 20week scan when I was carrying my son. You can’t help but worry, so before leaving I said is that okay though is he all healthy ? She said yes there’s nothing to worry about his abdomen was just a little large. He was 7lb 1 when born, he has a broad build but all healthy and absolutely beautiful, 11months old now 🥰

@Rhi oh the relief ! Thank you for this xxx

@Jodie thank you so much for your comment xx

It's happened to me with my daughter at every scan. Completely healthy baby, no GD. To be honest it makes me mad that they tell women that, it just causes unnecessary anxiety.

I had this as he was measuring big, they did a gestational diabetes test and that was all clear. He is now a happy 6 month old but weighed 9lb 4oz on birth being born at 40+1 and all healthy ❤️

I was told this and my baby was 9.2lb but looking at him I wouldn’t have said he had a big abdomen. I had GD x

@Alex aw thank you for your comment. I’m sorry this has happened to you. Yes it’s really not helpful when they tell you something but then don’t tell you why it’s a concern ?!

@michelle congratulations on your little boy 💙💙💙

@Katherine thanks very much x with GD do your birthing options change and are you put up to high risk?

@Emily You’re not allowed a home birth but other than that nothing really changes unless baby has a big jump in growth

@Katherine that’s strange - my baby is currently off the chart for her abdominal measurement and they haven’t denied me a home birth?

@Katherine The NHS is actually obliged to support you to have a home birth. The only time they can deny it is if there is no staff to sent to you. They can strongly advise you not to do it in some cases, but it's still up to you to decide.

@Alex Even with gestational diabetes?

@Rhi Only denied a home birth because of gestational diabetes, not because baby was big x

@Katherine legally, yes. The only time they can properly refuse is if you require a C-section because of danger to your or your babies life.

@Alex OK thanks, maybe I misunderstood them x

@Katherine They will do everything for you to think that you have to adhere to their recommendations, as the midwifes can loose their licence if something goes wrong, so don't beat yourself up🫂

@Emily no worries, I hope everything goes well for you!

@Alex thank you very much x
