Car seat on plane or in hold?

My partner and I are travelling with 4m old and toddler soon (2.5 hour flight). We have 4 seats booked. We need to take the car seat as we don't have one over there and it's not somewhere we can hire one. In the past we have hired / borrowed off friends we were visiting for toddler. I can't decide whether to take the seat on the plane so baby has somewhere to sit ( if he is happy!) or to put it in the hold ( worried it will get thrown around) but if it did go in the hold then we would have spare seat for moving/ leaving bits for the kids/ toddler to lay down..what would you do /.what do you do ?

I flew with my 4 months, and I had a nursing pillow. It was so comfy as he was able to lay down, eat, and play comfortably, and for me, it was comfortable too.

You’d need to check with the airline to whether you can use a car seat onboard, some are quite specific about what you can use

@Amy We've paid for a seat for him as it was really cheap but I'll check if car seat allowed, good shout. @Emilė if I don't take the car seat I'll take our pillow, thank you for sharing x

As far as I’m aware there are not many car seats that are approved for use on the plane so that’s worth looking into but just a note to say if you do put it in the hold you can box/bag it up so it doesn’t get damaged. If you have the original packaging you can take that or you can buy bags on Amazon which show what it is so it gets handled carefully. When we took it we bought a bag and padded it out with towels, nappies etc. 🙊

We're going away in a couple of weeks and have hired a doona (car seat and stroller in one) to take...haven't actually tried it yet so a bit nervous and only travelling with one baby rather than a baby and a toddler but we looked into taking the car seat and it all seemed very complicated with restrictions etc. We figured with the doona, we can use it as a car seat to get to the airport and we can take it right up to the plane as a stroller and then claim from baggage when we get there and have a car seat ready for the taxi...but who knows if it will work 🤪

Recently I put the carrycot to the pushchair in the hold (in a big bag from Amazon) and used the car seat through the airport on the pushchair frame with the adaptors then it went into the hold at the gate to reduce the risk of it being thrown around. That has worked well for us.
