GD Scans

Hi - I’ve been diagnosed with GD at 27 weeks pregnant with my first baby. I haven’t been offered any additional scans and was wondering if this is correct? I’ve seen on the NHS guidance that I perhaps should be but wanted to hear about your experiences. My bump was also not measured at my 25 week midwife appointment so I have no idea how baby is growing in terms of size in the last 7 weeks (since my 20 week scan). Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, I was automatically booked in for extra scans following my GD diagnosis at 28 weeks. It's probably worth messaging your midwife to ask about it

Thank you Ella - I haven’t had a great experience with my midwife so far - I did message her following my diagnosis and didn’t get a response. I will follow up with her as I’ll be 28 weeks next Friday.

Hi, have you had any contact with your antenatal clinic since you got your diagnosis? I was diagnosed at 28 weeks and it took a week or so but have now been in for a scan, chat with consultant and dietician/diabetes appointment for testing kit. I’m guessing it really depends on your trust but for me all those things were connected, and now it’s scans every 3 weeks for monitoring. If you haven’t heard from anyone I’d follow up with your midwife and ask what next steps are for GD and roll from there. I had to chase up as my name had been spelled wrong somewhere and it all got muddled.

Does your hospital have an advice line too? Mine has a number that I can call for non-urgent pregnancy queries (and another for urgent triage). That way I'm not reliant on one midwife. Also worth looking into. Sorry to hear you haven't had a great experience so far, definitely worth advocating for yourself x

@Jessica Hi Jessica - so my test was done at the hospital I’ll be giving birth at (Birmingham Women’s). They called me in for an education session and to recieve my blood glucose monitor but nothing since. I rneneebr vaguely the team there saying something about how we will continue on the same pathways of care? But the NHS website definitely says we should be given the 3 extra scans. I will definitely chase as I want the extra scans to keep an eye on things and make sure I’m on track. Thank you for your comment

@Ella I will double check on the advice line but I don’t think it’s something that’s been flagged so far. I will definitely follow up with my midwife and call the diabetes midwife team at the hospital I was diagnosed at too. Thank you for your support I really appreciate it X

I was booked in for my scan at 28 weeks when I was invited the collect the monitor and discuss the GD. You should deffo call the hospital to raise this incase it was forgotten or something as they will need to scan to check baby is growing ok. Hope they get you sorted xx

@Laura thank you Laura - you’ve all given me the reassurance that I should push for this X

Hey, I was diagnosed almost 2wks ago & was told at the same time a request for a growth scan at 30 & 36wks will be booked for me. I haven't yet been told when they are so I expect a letter early this week, but I'm led to believe every woman with GD will be monitored x

@Kerry thank you Kerry that’s really helpful X

I got diagnosed at 28 weeks and the next day I had two growth scans booked in for 32 and 36 weeks

I wasn’t booked for additional scans until my fundal height was really big at one of my midwife appointments
