Maternity pay NHS

I am an international student, gave birth in the United Kingdom, Do I have access to maternity pay as well from the Government? If I do, hope it’s not termed as public funds, I don’t want the pay to affect me applying for post study visa. Kindly help with information please 🙏 Thanks.

I think it is termed as public funds and therefore you will not have access to it unless you are on a skilled work visa. Best speaking to your immigration advisor at the University you study

Hi, yes, you can apply for SMP as long as you are employed, and you have been working with your employer for some months. Please do contact your HR/employer to apply. If your employer declines your application, then you can apply directly on the gov.uk site, and you can follow the instructions and due process.

I worked with the NHS as well. I got paid as I have worked with them for more than a year as at the time of my pregnancy

It’s not considered ‘public funds.’ I know of dozens of international students who have been entitled to SMP as long as they qualify - having worked prior to becoming pregnant and staying in the job for more than 26 weeks before going on maternity leave. Don’t worry, love, your post-graduate visa won’t be affected. You could also read up informations on the GOV.UK site and watch TikTok videos on how students got SMP to ease down your curiosity. Goodluck xx
