Vitamin K

What are your thoughts on the vitamin K shot ? Especially for baby boys getting circumcised. Was it always a thing in the past. Im a 90s baby and my parents was not recommended nor heard about vitamin K shot. Just feel spectacle about it.

I believe if your baby is getting circumcised it is required they get it. It helps their blood clot so I would recommend it regardless. The shot has been out since the 60s so your parents were probably just not informed that you got it. Seems to only be a thing parents in recent years have realized their babies are being given

Both of my babies received it in the hospital.

Belgium mom here 👋🏻 with us it is also recommended but in my opinion if you’re breastfeeding, nature will provide you with all necessary. There are reasons why there is less of this or that in breastmilk. Vit K doesn’t pass the placenta so the first weeks the amount of vitK is lower (since breastmilk is low in vitK) but the baby will start to create their own bacteria in the colons later which will produce the necessary vitK. In the end everyone does with it what they think is best but my kids never had any problems without the extra.

I don't intend to give it this time. I guess it will depend when you intend to circumcise. I was told the NHS won't carry out tongue tie procedure without vit K shot but I have found someone private who has done this numerous times without issue and happy to carry out the procedure. Vit k will naturally start to develop in baby and my reasoning is they are born without it for a reason, as nature intended

My child hasn't had any child vaccines and we are 21 months old now, Vitimin K is not a vitimin at all it's synthetic and used to clot blood. Candice Owens does a great deep dive explanation on all shots given to children and has dug deep into what's on the actual vaccines and how it affects the human body. Dr Paul Thomas is another great source who's done a comparison with vaccinated children VS unvaxed, he's also released a book that guides you how long to wait and which vaccines are useful and which not. If you are diving down this path be prepared for a big awakening to the lies we have been made to believe as "normal and for our greatest good" If you feel called not to do something stand your ground and don't let anyone bully you into doing anything you don't feel comfortable about. Side note. I was firm on my decisions well before having my son, and when we had our first maternal health check our nurse litrially took out the entire immunisation record out its common now not to do it.

I read Sarah’s Wickham’s book ‘Vitamin K and the the newborn’ and made the informed decision to kindly decline it.

Hi! My boy didn’t get it. He is not snipped, but did have frenectomy at 2weeks old and had no bleeding issues! They just had me breastfeed right away.

Definitely do your research and check with the hospital you’ll deliver at. Some hospitals make threats to involved CPS if you decline the vitamin K. Delayed cord clamping is also something to look into because baby can get vitamin K through that as well so if you decide to decline the shot, I would 100% recommend doing delayed cord clamping which is possible to do with either a vaginal or cesarean birth as long as baby doesn’t need attention immediately. My boy isn’t circumcised but I did get the shot because the hospital I delivered at, would’ve called CPS as I was warned prior by my medical provider (they’d seen it happen)

My son got the shot after deliver and got circumcised at 2 weeks of that helps

My mom is a labor and delivery nurse and says absolutely get it. If you want a boy circumcised it's a requirement or you'll have to delay the circ for a few weeks/months until their body can make enough. Babies don't have the ability to clot their own blood without it and it takes a while for them to build up enough on their own. Regardless of circ, it can prevent any bleeds from any amount of birth trauma that happened (brain bleeds etc). My opinion is it's a one time thing, better safe than sorry

I was based in NY in the first half of pregnancy and I was informed that while VitK is mandated in NY, parents do have the ability to sign a waiver declining the shot That being said, boys cannot be circumcised without the shot (at least in NY, could vary by location) I’ve since relocated to Poland and here the dialogue is much more open, people are not so judgemental about your choices to decline vaccinations and based on further research I’ve done I am deciding not to give it to my little boy (will also not be circumcising him) As one mom put it very appropriately, they are born as nature intended so why supplement them with artificial extras

I definitely gave it to my baby. Most don’t actually need it but for the few that do it prevents a potentially fatal bleeding condition. The catch is that you won’t know if your baby has that condition unless they die from it without the vitamin k shot and I wasn’t taking any risks. He’s 3 now and it obviously had no ill effects

@Samantha people do it for religious purposes ! It’s not very respectful to call it stupid and selfish 🙂

I got my son circumcised and the vitamin K shot. Just to be cautious. But do your own research of course. You don’t need to get it if you don’t want to

I can’t speak on the circumcision as I’m in the UK and it’s not something that’s really advocated for here however the Vit K shot is offered religiously. First thing I’ll say, is to call it vitamin K is a bit of a sham as it’s not vitamin K, it’s a synthetic version. Secondly, to state that all babies are born without the required amount of vitamin K needed is basically stating there’s a flaw in nature. I didn’t consent to the shot for multiple reasons and I’d recommend reading ‘vitamin k and the newborn’ by Sarah Wickham to get all the facts before you make a decision. Others have read the book and decided to still have it so it’s very non bias and factual. As someone else said though, if you are prepared to go down this rabbit hole, it may lead to you questioning a lot of other things especially the childhood vaccination programmes but that’s a comment for another post I suppose! Best of luck with your research, it’s a minefield!

@Jasmine nail on the head mama! Thank you for the reading recommendations.

The vitamin K shot is a completely evidence based and safe measure to protect your baby from literally bleeding out. There are many reasons this could happen, so take the shot as a precaution. I know all of us would do everything to protect our kids: vit K is simply another thing we can do :) the shot became standard practice in 1961 and the increase in families refusing the shot is a very dangerous trend caused by misinformation and fear mongering. If you actually follow the science on this one, you will know that babies are born with an inadequate supply of vitamin K and the risk of bleeding continues through the first weeks of birth. I encourage you to protect your baby and get the shot! And if it is Candace Owens telling you to not take the shot… omg she’s a right wing conspiracy theorist with 0 medical expertise. Get your knowledge literally anywhere else!!

And in case you don’t believe me: prevalence of vitamin k deficiency bleeding was extremely low until about 2013, when there was an upsurge in refusing the shot. As refusal rates have increased, plot twist, so have bleeding rates. And it is not just bleeding to be concerned about as another commenter has shared. It is literally death. You are making a life and death decision here.

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 would be fantastic if this was true! But it isn’t. There is minimal vitamin K available in the cord blood. Delayed cord clamping will do nothing to prevent vitamin k deficiency bleeding.

It aids the blood clotting and prevents a specific blood disorder which I have forgotten the name of so I’d recommend getting it

So the vitamin K shot is a preventative medicine! There are tons of babies who will never need it & be fine, but there are babies who desperately need it. We have very little information as to which ones will need it until it’s too late. I don’t recommend circumcision as a personal choice, but I understand it’s still important for religious reasons. So yea, vitamin K is important!

Hi!! I think if you circumcise, you have to do the shot to prevent bleeding. We did with our first but after learning about things with our second we decided to just keep things how they were and go without 🤍

@Lina vitamin k shot is recommended for ALL babies, regardless of whether they are circumsized. Best practice is to get the shot :) babies are born with an insufficient supply and bleeding out is deadly

My little boy got both and I don’t regret it as a mom. I got the vitamin k because I would rather my son be safe and healthy than bleed out. We agreed to get him circumcised because in the long end it easier to take care of and have to worry less about catching something like yeast infection or something like that. My fiancé who isn’t circumcised agreed to get it done for our son because he understands!
