Baby measuring small

Hi All, I just had my 26 week midwife appointment where they measured my bump for the first time. I am quite petite and have a small bump but only measured in the 12th percentile. The midwife said she would only be concerned if my next measurement does not follow the graph and goes below the 10th percentile which will be checked at my 28 week appointment but as this is my first pregnancy I am very anxious. Has anyone had anything similar? Thank you 😊

I had the opposite with my son, where they felt he measuring an absolute beast, but he turned out to be born around 80th percentile, not huge at all. Bear in mind second + time mums don't even have the earlier midwife appointment, so that measurement can't be that important! x

My baby was under 10th percentile in the growth scans but bump measurement was 50th so know that bump size doesn’t mean much because everyone carries differently! Also, my baby went from 9th centile at 32 weeks to 47th at 36 weeks in the actual growth scan and was born 3 weeks early at 7 pounds! I’d take it with a pinch of salt, they’re so often wrong. My sister was told her baby was going to be 10lb at 40 weeks, was born 39+4 and 7lb8! Just means you might get given more scans which is nice anyway!

Try not to stress to much my 1st born measured super small and is in the 50th percentile weighing 6 pounds 8 and my second born measured huge however when born she's in the 25th percentile weighing 7pds 13oz so smaller than my son x

My 1st they told me baby is measuring normal and she was born 42 weeks 10lbs lol

@Charmaine thank you! Did your first born measure small throughout your pregnancy and were you given extra scans because of this? X

Yes he did and yes I was given 3 extra scans I think it was and he was late I had him at 42 weeks dead on on all the paper work it say stuff about fetal growth for him but he is a happy heavy bouncy little boy now still measuring in the 50th percentile meeting all his milestones I would take it with a pinch of salt cause I was so worried everyone going on about him being so small then when he came yea he was small but healthy and complelty fine x

Oh that’s brilliant news, I’m so glad he was born healthy. That’s made me feel more at ease x

Remember, fundal height is a tool (one of many!) that they use to track the growth of your uterus, NOT the size of your baby. A single reading on its own won't indicate much. Ideally, if you are measuring 10-20% then you want to stay measuring 10-20% at every appointment. If you measured 12% now and then at your next appointment suddenly measured 50% it would indicate an unhealthy growth rate which needs to be investigated.

With my first I was sent for growth scans due to bump measurements and a doctor at the hospital said to me “how accurate is a tape measure?” And it really stuck with me. Try not to over think it. Everyone I know who has had growth scans for a small or big baby has ended up with a perfectly healthy baby!

@Kirsty thank you, that’s really helpful! X

@Bryony thank you! That’s a very good point. Did you have to have many growth scans and were they from about 26/27 weeks? As it’s my first I think I’m just a bit hypersensitive to everything but I’m glad to know that all the babies were healthy when they were told baby was either measuring small/big x

I think I had 2 or 3 growth scans plus additional monitoring. After each scan I was told everything was fine and I was released back to my midwife, then my next midwife app I was measuring big again so was sent for another growth scan 😂
