I have a few questions…

Today was my babies 9 month appointment and a few things made me worried. The nurse asked if he was eating food yet and i said yes because he has been eating things like eggs, little baby pancakes, etc. And she whipped her head around and looked at me completely shocked and asked “like real foods or puréed?”. They gave me the feeling he wasn’t supposed to eat what I’ve been giving him! Another thing was she was asking if he could wave hello/bye. And I said no and she looked worried. And then she asked if he could look around for things, for example “where’s your bottle?” And then start looking for it. And I said no and she looked worried again. What are the time frames for these things? After that I feel like my baby isn’t in track or something😭

I just had my 9 month appointment today and they didn’t ask anything about waving hello or good bye, or finding/locating things. They did ask about eating solids but didn’t ask what kind I just said she is eating breakfast lunch and dinner and they said okay. All babies grow at different rates. My daughter is standing/cruising already and that’s not a milestone until 12 months but can also take up to 18 months apparently. May I ask what your child’s weight and height percentiles ? If they were low this could be why they had some concern.

My baby is turning 9months on Monday and she’s eating solids. It called BLW he is fine. With the waving bye bye every child is different. My daughter wave bye bye in her own way and she can even give high five. Most kids can’t do that at her age. I’ll say practice with him that’s all you can do until he’s ready. Also if you’re concern you can download the Milestones app from cdc

@Madison he is in the 50th for both. He is also standing up and cruising!

@Amarie thank you!

Maybe you were misreading their looks of concern? They could just be surprised at how advanced he is! Standing/cruising is not a milestone for a couple more months and maybe they were just surprised by how much he was eating as good thing!

I’ve been working with kids for 3 years and i’ve never met a 9 month old that waves hi/bye or understands how to look for things. don’t feel worried, your child is not behind in that regard at all! as for the solids, it’s completely okay that they’re eating non puréed foods. as long as the food is soft enough it’s good that your baby is getting introduced to the process of chewing and even feeding themself if they do that. many ppl who chose to do BLW start around this age and some ppl start as early as 6m depending on if their baby has teeth

@Madison maybe but my boyfriend got the same vibe too😭

The concerned look around what your baby is eating is going to be common from medical professionals. Many are against BLW even when done in a safe manner. I know our pediatrician is but we do it all safely and my baby would not be eating anything if we only did purees. He hated them until we introduced finger foods and now he'll eat both. As for the other questions, those are more advanced milestones. They aren't even on the development screening for 9 months.

Either you were miss reading her or she needs to fix her face. Bc everything you said was normal.

I told the pediatrician I’ve done baby led weaning and she was very neutral / polite. I do think the waving thing will happen any time now. If you act excited to see your partner when he walks in the room, does your baby turn towards the noise and look at him? I think (??) that’s fairly normal / expected, maybe that’s what she means?

@tahlia you mean on command right? Mine waves at people and smiles her big smile, but not on command
