First bath

Do you plan letting the hospital bathe your baby after delivery or at home before the umbilical cord falls off? Like a sponge bath. I know you’re not supposed to give a regular bath.

with my first I had the hospital give her a bath a few hours before we left and plan to do the same this time around

Hospital

I don’t plan on letting them or even doing it myself at home. With my first he got really bad acne all over his face starting at 2 weeks and I read it could be from bathing?

@Danielle idk about that but there’s that waxy coating on their skin called vernix that you can let wear off naturally as opposed to bathing - it helps their immune systems

@Delaney that’s what I was reading about. I heard it also protects their skin

@Danielle yeah I guess it protects and moisturizes the skin also. I read that if it has any meconium staining it needs to be washed off right away though.

It’s better to leave their skin unbathed for at least a few days :) with my first I didn’t know that and had her bathed in the hospital and she had some baby bumps especially on her face shortly after, I’m not sure if it’s just a coincidence but with my second I didn’t bath her for a week and she didn’t have any baby acne at all

You can give them a regular bath just don’t get the umbilical cord get too wet 😊 With my first he spent 2 weeks in hospital on antibiotics after he was born and the nurses bathed him before his umbilical cord fell off and said it’s fine Often in the UK people wait a few days so I guess it depends how long you’re in hospital and how soon you want to bath them

The uk don’t bathe babies anymore. They didn’t when my sister was born 11 years ago & didn’t for my first who’s 2 now or my niece & nephew so will have to be at home

I don’t bathe for a week. I’ve rubbed the vernix into them and they’ve all been great.

My daughter barely had any of the white flakes on her so, she was sponge bathed and was completely fine. She smelled like baby lotion. 😅 I’ll have my twins bathed too.

Was never offered a bath in hospital, and would do it anyway, what’s the point just enjoy that brand new skin! We started to do top and tail wash with water when baby was a few days old and getting baby acne etc, at 12 days we gave her the first proper bath when umbilical cord had fully healed but still didn’t use products till she was abit older.

I bathed my son in the hospital the day after he was born, I wasn’t going to but I had meconium in my amniotic fluid so it felt gross to not get him cleaned up. I think the doctors just grabbed a qtip and VERY lightly dabbed the umbilical cord and then we just let it air dry. Definitely do what you feel comfortable with. there’s a lot of people that don’t even do sponge baths for the first while!

My hospital didn’t offer baths for my first baby. But his hair was so nasty from birth blood and fluids that we did get to wash his head in a sink 😂

Didn't bath for a few days or maybe a week. Never had any problem with their skin 🤷🏾‍♀️ to this day no issues. Du whatever feels right for your baby
