Does anyone else have an older kid that has zero motivation for school?

How old if you don’t mind me asking? My primary school kid hates going, says I hate school every day🤦🏻‍♀️

@Dee 16

Hope you get the answers you’re looking for. Sorry I can’t be much help, even tho I feel like mine is 6 going on to 16😅

I don't have a 16 year old, but have you asked them why they don't like school? Maybe they're getting bullied, maybe they don't have the support they need, or maybe they are struggling with their identity in some way and feel restricted 🤷

@Jae 👾 they do online school

By 16 kids have an idea of whether or not school is working for them, and if it's not, they're forced to go anyway. Ask if they'd be interested in getting a GED and starting a technical school, community college, or apprenticeship. If they don't have the motivation for that, ask what they would like to do instead of school. If they want to travel and live on their own, what ideas do they have about how will they make money to pay for those things? Be honest about how long you are willing to support them if they are not enrolled in school. If they don't have any ideas, are they just interested in switching online schools or going to in person school? Maybe they aren't getting good support or just need new teachers/projects/opportunities. Even if their idea is to be a social media influencer or music producer, there is a school out there that will accommodate that. Push them to start looking for their own solutions that don't involve living in your house forever, and having them present the information to you.

@Bonny where I live kids have to stay in school till they are 18. they also have to be 18 1/2 years old to get a GED. they have no interest in switching online schools or switching to in person. they had a bad experience with the school they started when we moved and so they decided to do online school the next year.

What state? Because most states it’s 18 OR having passed the GED. Traditional school didn’t work for my 19 year old. He did a GED program through our local community college and graduated a full year early and is now in college to be an EMT.

@SquishyMommy1 For us students must stay in school until the end of the semester or other school term when they turned 18. at 17 years may be excused from regular school to participate in another type of program or modified curriculum that will lead to either graduation or a high school equivalency diploma, such as a GED prep course or a work-study program. They also can't earn a high school equivalency diploma or GED certificate—or even take the test—until they’re at least 18.5 years old or their ninth grade class has graduated

That’s weird because the GED is a national test and has no such age requirement

If online school was offered as an alternative to an uncomfortable in person school situation, maybe it's time to revisit that arrangement. As long as it's not a direct safety issue, they need to get their grades up by the end of this term or they can go back to in person school where they will have more eyes on their academics.

@Bonny in person won't change anything. We would still be dealing with the same stuff.

I have this issue with no motivation. The attention span is through the roof. I'm at my wits end

@Sha we have always had issues with school

Do the teachers/ school staff try to support both of you? And give you some feedback on how the days go?
