Reflux normal or excessive?

My 4.5 month old is and always has been a very sicky baby. She will go through several outfits a day because she is sick so many times. A mixture of milk sick ups and sometimes clear liquid. HV says reflux is common due to developing stomach etc which I understand but it is all the time and just wondering if there is either some things I can do to help or is there actually something wrong. She is exclusively breastfed, no bottles. She doesn't seem to be bothered by being sick and she doesn't get trapped wind and she is putting on weight steadily, between 25/50th centile - so that's why the HV has said not to worry about it. Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience and has any tips. My first born was also breastfed and he also had bottles of formula and never had this issue so I'm clueless! TIA

My little boys 5 months, he's formula fed and he is exactly the same. Only difference is he has runny poo🙄. The amount of sick has been so draining. We changed his milk yesterday to lactose free. I get changing the milk isn't an option for you. But maybe get a second opinion from a different health visitor/GP. Or if you don't already, possibly cut out lactose in your diet see if it makes a difference? X

I could have written this myself, my baby is exactly the same and it’s hard!! I have introduced a bottle of formula a day now and it’s even worse now. Considering booking a GP apt but not sure what they will do as my babies putting on weight well x

@Arlena i considered a lactose allergy but again the HV said it was unlikely because there are no other symptoms, and she isn't bothered by it! I think I might have to try it as much as it kills me to cut dairy!

@Katie it is exhausting! And it is unpredictable, I could cope if it was say the same time after each feed but there seems to be no rhyme or reason. Dad thinks to take her to doctor but if she's happy and healthy, would they do anything? I keep hearing that it gets better at six months so I'm hoping that's the case

My little boy is exactly the same, I thought he had reflux and took him to the drs but because he is 5 months she said she didn't want to give gaviscon if he didn't need it and as he is so close to weaning she didn't want to start him on anything. He is formula fed and I thought he might be lactose allergy as both me and his dad did when were babies but because he has no other symptoms plus he's not losing weight she wasn't concerned. She told me to try him on infacol as she thought it could be colic and so far he's been a lot less sicky since been on it. Definitely take her to the drs just to see what they say, I was told to try infacol or colief x

This is my 2nd refluxy baby so I know it all 😂😂 Reflux is usually a symptom of either a poor latch (could be due to a tongue tie or tension) or an allergy (dairy being the most common). Lactose intolerance is actually something quite different and nowhere near as common. If your happy with your latch then you could try going dairy free for a few weeks as you would notice at least a small improvement in that time if it was dairy. However your so close to weaning you could also just wait until then to test it. If your latch is a bit iffy (dribbling milk, misshapen or blanched nipples) that would be something to look at to see if it improves the sickness. Xx

Thanks all. I struggled with positioning at the beginning with her because the last time I breastfed was a one year old so I forgot all the rules and holds, I was so used to just chucking him on! I think I could be getting lazy again as she has always had such a good latch compared to my first born who was hard work and I always maintained good practice. I will work on my positioning and hope that helps in the meantime whilst I wait for a doctor's appointment, hopefully I can be seen this week. I know I can have a strong let down which sometimes she struggles at so perhaps that's making her gulp air? Thanks all for your comments it's nice knowing it's not uncommon!
