Refusing to go in car seat

My 21 month old is having a massive tantrum when it comes to getting in the car seat! I try to distract him with toys etc but he is hysterical and just goes all stiff so i cant get him in! He tries to kick me, bite me and is screaming! I cant physically force him in as im worried i'll end up hurting him. It sounds stupid but its resulted in us not going out for the second day in a row! Its embarrising as the neighbours will look over and they probably think im hurting him. Im pregnant and struggling and he is heavy! Any tips? I cant just not go out 🙈

Hey, I don’t know if you are a Christian or not but next time you’re about to get in the car. Pray “Jesus please help my son to be calm”. God sees you ❤️

One of ours is the same, I tickle him to get him to bend his body and give him a cracker (or digestive biscuit if he's really bad), once we start driving he calms down. It's very tedious.

Ask him to be a big boy and climb in himself, even help you get the straps on etc xx

@Kiera haha yes I tried this and he just sits in the footwell screaming. Hoping it passes soon 😃

@Hannah oh god🫣🫣 yeah just try and make it as fun as possible, I find rather than asking him ‘can you get in your seat please’, give him a choice ‘would you like to get in or shall mummy help’ if that makes sense xx

@Kiera yes I have 21mo twins and a 4yo so our approach is more about getting all children off the road but I appreciate your support.

Me 👋 sometimes he goes in a dream, other times he is a terror. I ask him if he is going to be a good boy, or "do you want to go the park, nursery, shop etc" if he says yes (which he most likely does) I say well we have to get you strapped in then silly! If he is coming back from nursery he is normally hungry, so I bribe him with "shall we get you a biscuit at home" he says yes and he normally settles into the seat. If all else fails, I don't speak to him and I plug the straps in first and then put his arms through and tighten.

Same here, it worked giving him the phone with some cartoons just enought to put him in the chair. Meanwhile we changed a bit to front facing and now he is super excited about the ride, even asks to get in the car. Back to rear facing due to safety, but still excited to be in the car. Hopefully we wont need the screen again.

Have you tried using a favourite toy as a distraction, getting him to hold onto say the keys or something whilst you put him in and strap him in etc?
