Hi, I did. Pethidine does not take the pain away, just makes you drowsy like a drunken feeling.

I had 2 doses of pethidine and it worked really well for me. I was able to get some sleep

I had pethidine also and agree it doesn’t take the pain away just made me super drowsy and sick but it’s different for everyone x x Would I reccomened .. I don’t think I would personally however it could have been from this that my body relaxed a bit as my waters broke about an hour after I had it x x

Didn’t do anything for me

Yes I had the exact same feeling as Kayci above, but only issue is, it gets passed to baby and they don't cry when they are born.... it takes a good few hours for it to wear off them. The drowsiness helps you sleep and take your mind off the pain. Tbh I wish I had it with my second as well Another thing I would say though is with my first, I had pethidine and he didn't push himself out as he was drowsy. But with my second, pushing was easier as she literally pushed herself out but you feel alllÄşll the pain but I was also on a hormone drip which made the pain worse.

I had two doses, first was great and really helped with the pain but the second I don’t think did anything Just to reference the comment above, my baby also did come out crying

I wouldn’t recommend it, doesn’t really help. The pain was still there but I felt drunk, lost and didn’t understand what was going on although I kinda was in an active labor. I believe I would deliver the baby faster if not pethidine but that’s my experience 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree with olga. I had pethadine after having been in painful latent labour for 2 days (back to back baby) and I didn’t really want it but it was the only way to stay at the hospital (I had been back and forth three times at this point but they wouldn’t let me stay as it wasn’t active labour). It made me drowsy but not able to sleep, ramped up the pain immediately after I had it too. My daughter became distressed and pooed in the womb (which they said could have been because of pethadine). My sister had pethadine and my niece got distressed too and she had to have an emergency c section (properly knocked out for it!) so both experiences I have of pethadine resulted in a distressed baby. I was lucky I was so far along by the time she pooed or I would have needed a section too.

I had pethidine with my first baby, didn't take the pain away but made me sleep in-between contractions x

@Lauren same for me, it was the only way to stay in the hospital, my contractions were extremely painful and I was in labor but they thought I still should go home and wait. Although 1 hour later I was in active labor so I am glad I didn’t go home, otherwise not sure where I how I would deliver. I asked for a debrief.

This was the exact same experience I had! Went into active labour about an hour later too! If they had just let me stay it would have all been fine

I had pethidine, did take the pain away but also made me feel really spaced out but would have taken that over the pain every day. It wore off very fast though within about an hour and you can only have a dose every 4-6 hours so it was a temporary solution for me and I ended up having an epidural after this wore off. It wasn't a gradual wear off either it just lumped me straight back in a contraction. My baby also got a bit distressed towards the end of labour but I did have a very long induced labour 20+ hours so there's no knowing if it was related. It also made her quite sleepy after she was born. All in all I think it's good pain relief and worked for me and worth a try if you're wanting to try and avoid epidural but want some assistance with pain x

It was a waste of my time. The Dr who would give it wandered off for 5 hours right after I asked for it so I was left with just gas and air for hours when Id requested pethidine and then as soon as I had the injection I knew I was 100% past my point of coping and I wanted the epidural so I requested it there and then they said I had to wait 30 mins for the pethidine to kick in before they could give an epidural to make sure there were no issues with either medication I agreed and 45 mins after the pethidine was given the Dr was getting ready to insert my epidural. The little bit of time it was my sole pain relief it was useless it did absolutely nothing for me but that was very likely due to being past my point of pain tolerance.

If you’re having a long ass labour it can help you get some sleep before the pushing starts but like others have said, it doesn’t do much for the pain. For me, it put me to sleep then each contraction woke me up, then I’d fall back to sleep again.
