Weaning + health anxiety

I feel such a failure šŸ˜” I wish I could go back at 6 months and start my son's weaning all over again. He just turned 10 months ago, and we havenā€™t explored many aliments or textures. I never did BLW. I have had health anxiety (hypochondriac) since I was young, and this is one of the reasons why my son has only had purĆ©ed food. I am so scared of him chocking and my health anxiety thoughts are like ā€œheā€™s gonna choke and I am not going to be able to help himā€ or ā€œhe will be allergic stop breathing and I donā€™t have an epi-pen or an ambulance wouldnā€™t arrive on timeā€ I know it may sound stupid šŸ˜” I havenā€™t felt confident to try nuts for the above reasons and I would love to have the chance to perhaps test it in a hospital or near doctors (I think that would ease my anxiety) I really want to do BLW as heā€™s 10 months now and has 4 teeth, I just donā€™t know how to do it Iā€™ve watched YouTube videos but feel I am not capable šŸ˜” Any tips for a desperate mum?

Have you tried looking at doing first aid courses so you know how to deal with chocking if it happens? I was worried about my little one initially and at times still do but the more you do let them try new things the easier it becomes. If you havenā€™t already, the solid starts app is brilliant for learning how to prepare food for your baby. I would prepare it for 6month old as youā€™re starting that journey of moving onto textured food. Good luck- youā€™ve got this!

Stop feeling like a failure. You're being horrible to yourself and as a fellow mum, I'm going to mum you and tell you to stop it. Health scares, anxiety, health anxiety are real things and hard to overcome. It's baby step time if you want to start. It's nver too late and there is so much pressure for BLW. You sound like you're at a good point to start. We did purees and gradually moved to trying the odd thing, moving more to lumpy food and then she would try something, sometimes it was scary, she hamster pouched some chicken while we were having a meal out and I let her try it, thought it had gone, smiling, giggling and then out popped some chicken. She was fine. Hasn't choked on any food we have given her yet(touch wood) had coughing and gagging (think that might be her rejecting mu cooking) it's scary though but if it helps, yes go sit in your hospital carpark and try peanut butter or eggs, so on. Only you know that's why you're there when all goes fine and your home again. It will be a relief and you will

Feel good about it, all these steps help x the first food my LG tried was a family remember giving her a melty stick, she loved it. We still have them as snacks, and the melty hoops help with the pincer grip. I'm not trying to scare you on the choking side but we have had that, her pushchair was parked along side my mums herb bed, she nabbed a piece of parsley, we all thought she was fine but then gagged and coughed, started drooling a lot and struggling to cough. No second thought, no panic, I got her out the pushchair and tipped her over my knee and after a couple of pats it was out and she was fine. Adrenaline kicks in. I was so worried about her choking and I still do with toys and things she shouldn't have but in the moment, it all kicks in to help baby x we did mini first aid, it did cost 50 quid but if it helps it helps, there are free ones too, this just suited us best, more 1 2 1 class too which made me nervous but also got me more involved. X really don't want to scare you about the choking but it

Wasn't even the food we gave her, she eats all sorts now. I use solid starts for how to prep things still but as you become more confident it come more naturally x start with the mushier things, cooked sweet potato pieces are lovely and soft, advacado, Broccoli breaks up easily and has a handy trunk to hold x do it with someone with you, I made sure my hubby was here for some things that she tried, some were on meals out and we were surrounded by people xx take it at your pace though x sorry about the 3 comments.. I type too much for peanut to handle xxx take cafe, you're a good mum xxx

Take care* xxx

@Bronte THANK YOU so much for taking your time to write such a long message it made me definitely much better šŸ„° itā€™s so hard to do things when I have such thoughts! My partner is so chill about it. Like the other day I gave him purĆ©ed fruit and he looked so happy eating it and all of a sudden he brought everything up (not vomit i think) he coughed made puke sound and all the puree came out of his mouth. He cried afterwards but I think it was because I started feeling anxious and panicked a bit so started yelling calling my partner who was in the kitchen It looks like heā€™s ready to chew things as he tries to grab the spoon and put in his mouth + my partner gave him an Ellaā€™s kitchen biscuit and when I came downstairs I saw he was eating by himself and almost finishing I really want to do a an in person first aid course, in my area I saw they were doing for Ā£200+ and itā€™s something unfortunately I couldnā€™t pay. Now thereā€™s a course Ā£30 per person coming up next month

@Bronte fingers crossed that will help with my health anxiety. Thank you so much again for mum me - it definitely helped me a lot ā¤ļø

@Amy I am planning on doing a class in November as they were so expensive and this one came up for only Ā£30 Solid Starts App helped me a lot itā€™s my go to when I introduce an aliment but I still puree x and thatā€™s a great idea to start from 6 months. I donā€™t want to feel heā€™s behind

You arent doing anything wrong. We do a mix of BLW and purees but do remember that BLW is quite a new concept, when we were babies it was only purees or baby food jars or baby porridge, my mum didnt give me proper food til after 1 as this was the norm and I definitely know how to eat! The best thing to try are the melty sticks or banana wafers as they dissolve in the mouth so far less choking risk, so it will help you to build confidence for baby to try those first. They are so good at moving food forward they learn so quickly! Good luck x
