Upset Tummy on Cows Milk

We have just started to introduce cows milk to our little boy now he’s almost 13 months but the last couple days he’s pooping a lot more than is usual and it’s very runny and smelly Is this normal when they start cows milk or could it be lactose intolerance (he used to be on comfort formula which does have a lower lactose level than normal formula)

I swapped my 1year old a couple weeks ago early on cows milk but she got constipated so doctor said to put her back on formula. I am now trying again but weaning and only doing an oz mixed in with her formula and she’s already showing signs of struggling. 😩

They don’t really develop lactose intolerance until later but it could be some kind of sensitivity to it. Did you use formula or breastfeed at all did that have dairy in it?

This was exactly same as my little one. He was on kendamil comfort due to him having horrendous reflux when he was younger. Moved him straight over to cows milk which was a huge mistake, he loved the taste but the diarrhoea and parts were horrendous. The more it built up in him it was deffs giving him tummy ache. He would wake up crying and his room would smell so badly of farts. So I put him back on formula for a bit to get his tummy back to normal. Then I would add an Oz of cows milk into his formula. Same thing g happened, he couldn't tolerate it at all was upset and not eating food or anything. I've now moved him onto arla lacto free whole milk and he loves it and is doing really well. Deffs think it's a lactose intolerance in my sons case

@Gabrielle yeah we used sma comfort which is lower in lactose than normal formula

@Katie yeah I think we might be in the same situation. I’m going to give it a few more days to see if he settles down, it hasn’t been as bad today but he has now got really bad nappy rash because of it :( If it doesn’t settle down I might give that arlo milk a try

So glad I found this, first tried cows milk as a drink and son was sick so have been trying to introduce it really slowly over the last 4 weeks one oz at a time and he’s had the worst poos since then, even nursery have commented on them this week. So I took him to the drs Tuesday to get some advice and they were not helpful she prescribed a cmpa formula and has done a dietician referral but I kind of want to either put him on a cows milk alternative rather than a whole new formula now he’s over 1, I’ve stopped the cows milk and gone back onto full formula bottles but his bum is now so sore and he’s not slept for 4 weeks. I’m thinking about going back to the GP but I just didn’t find their help useful

Gotcha yeah he could have an allergy to it or a sensitivity. We tried a lower lactose one too and it was better then just a normal cows milk formula. But we switched to goat and that was great. Now we use oat milk

I think I’m just going to try transition to oat milk rather than try the cpma formula I just don’t want to cause more upset with the oat milk just yet. His poor tummy and bum just want to get them back to normal. Did you find any side effects with the oat milk?
