Poo with holding!

Baby is 10 months tomorrow. During an illness a few weeks ago he got constipated. Had a hard time passing (passed on the toilet eventually in the squat position). Ever since it's an absolute battle, he is scared to go, with holds which results in constipation and the circle continues! I have tried massages, exercises, warm bath, frog pose, squatting on the toilet and it is just so traumatic every time! His diet at the this point is pretty much just high fibre of fruit and veg only at the moment and at least one to two prune pouches a day and high amounts of water! I do have the HV tomorrow so will bring up the possibility of stool softeners until he goes regularly without fear, but just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience and what you did to overcome this? I've only heard of it in toddlers, who are (although not easy) a bit easier to reason with than babies!

We’ve not had something similar but my little girl has chronic constipation and she’s been on a daily dose of movicol the last 4 months and only recently has she been able to go without having to have the movicol. It might be worth trying to get some stool softener so that it eases your little one to go to the toilet without having the fear of it hurting x

My daughter had a tear in her bum, so she's been on stool softners and just recently a stimulant. It's awful, she absolutely screams the house down when she has a poo and you can tell she panics. The tear is slowly getting better but I'm worried she'll be scared to go xx

@Kelly that first constipation a small amount came out before the toilet that caused a small tear too, but it was so small it healed in a day so I'm not sure that it was particularly that that caused a problem, I think it was the pain of passing, and now the cycle of it! So fingers crossed for you!

@Julia oh bless her! I'm hoping they do give him something as it is heartbreaking. Also now disturbing his sleep as the days he doesn't go he wakes up screaming and planks/squeezes until he no longer has to go! He usually would otherwise sleep 12 hours straight!

I gave my baby girl pure pawpaw blended juice and she gets fine.

Aww bless him. Have tried him with prunes? They always do the trick with my little girl on top of the movicol. Also if he is straining so much watch out that he does get piles. My little girl had them due to the straining and constipation and they have only disappeared about 3 weeks ago but they would bleed from time to time just like a little graze so sudocream has been our bestie x

Thanks all for the tips. He's been seen by the GP after the HV who luckily saw him in action with holding! and is now on a course of laxatives! Hopefully he'll overcome his fear soon!
