In need of a bit of reassurance

We had our 20 week scan on Thursday and my fibroid has grown and placenta is covering the cervix (placenta privia). I’d started to get my head around all the things that that potentially entails and then my mum managed to scare our springer spaniel who then jumped on my tummy really hard. I’m cramping a bit and can’t work out whether movement has disappeared or not. My mum gave us a stethoscope to try and hear the heartbeat (she’s a retired nurse) but we haven’t been able to hear anything. My husband is amazing but I don’t want to panic him so I’m playing it cool. I’m also self employed so just ducking out of work to get some advice isn’t an option in my field. Basically just looking for a friendly voice to tell me it’s all good!

Sorry to hear you have this stress. Hope they are monitoring the fibroid, though have heard of women being ok with this in pregnancy. Pregnancy previa can be problematic but more so for delivery and there is every chance it’ll move upwards, something they should check on. As for the dog jumping on your tummy, this is really unlikely to of caused any harm to baby or placenta. They are very well protected in there. Not the same but my toddler has had a few knocks into my belly too. Remember movement at this stage is still quite inconsistent. If however it feels really out of character then call triage. But most likely all ok! Maybe just drink some cold water or something fizzy as sugar can make babies active, lie down, deep breaths & relax with hands on belly and see if anything is felt over 10-15mins. It really depends on how frequent you’ve been feeling baby. Sometimes I get really noticeable movement and then go long periods with none. Patterns are more 24+ weeks.

Cramping could be coincidental as uterus growth has this feeling too or maybe from the shock there’s some association. But again if it’s anything more than light and not stopping and has you worried then call triage. You can asked to be seen and sometimes just helps for peace of mind. With the stethoscope, this won’t pick up babies heartbeat. You might mean doppler which could work but is really hit & miss and not advised to use and can cause more anxiety especially if you can’t locate anything. So would avoid using that and if go by your gut and if you really feel movement/cramps are out of character then call triage and go in. I know you say about self-employed but there will be occasions you have to get checked or out your health first. However the most likely scenario is everything is fine!

My placenta covered my cervix in my previous pregnancy & it moved up, you will be closely monitored closer to delivery. My cat jumps on my belly all the time ( never done it prior to pregnancy) & my Dalmatian doesn’t know personal space so will accidentally stand on my belly here & there but baby is well protected in there although it is terrifying! Please don’t be afraid to ring & get checked out, midwife’s will be more than happy to listen into baby & to put your mind at ease it’s better than sitting at home panicking, going down a rabbit hole.

I'd contact your MAU your health is more important than work even if that is self employed
