Reusable Nappy Advice

So I’ve never tried them myself but I know someone who has and hated it because realistically you’d need double the amount of nappies you’d usually use in a day because of washing and drying! She also found it really hard to get the poo out because it just stained. I honestly don’t think you’d say that much money, most nappies are cheap size 1 and 2 are literally £1 a pack… and sizes 3/4 are like £3 for around 50. It only really gets expensive if you use pampers but we personally hated pampers when our little boy was small because they fit weird and he reacted so bad to them! Xx

They are easy to use, easy to clean. I just don't use them as my OH has a sensitive nose and constantly said he could smell "wee" even though I couldn't. So we cleaned the nappies in all the ways they recommend online and he could still smell wee. We've decided to use disposables until we move and get a garden and then we will dry outside as it's meant to take the smell come out. They also only last 3 hrs max and you'll need to find what works to make them last overnight. So heavy duty ones you can buy designed for night time..x

I use liners which prevent stains. Just don't use them as the OH and his sensitive nose x

I’ve been saying the exact same thing my OH but he does seem to see this as a problem because he never does laundry 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m trying to put my foot down with this one as the last thing we need as a new mum is extra chores to manage alongside everything else! I’m also surprised at how cheap nappies are!! Xx

@Deb thank you for your advice ❤️ goodness they sound quite difficult to get properly clean! Also during the night sounds like it could be a problem as well! I do like the idea of them but just feel it sounds like a lot of hassle to possibly save a little money, if any 🙈 thank you again, very helpful advice!

We're going to use reuseables, we've already bought some and been given some from family and friends. I'd recommend joining some of the reusable nappy Facebook groups if you're interested/ thinking about going down this route because they can give you tonnes of advice from experience on what works. My sister in law used reusables with both her girls and loves them so I've been getting advice from her, really helps if you can find someone who has used them. Maybe post this in a different/ wider group so you're more likely to get a response from people who have used them?

@Samantha tell him you can use reusables if he’s washing them all😂😂 also does he know how cheap nappies actually are?😂😂😂

I personally havent used them for my little girl but remember reading on my local council an incentive for using them so worth looking on your local council website for “reusable nappy incentive” xx

@Samantha, you have to wash them within 48 hours of getting dirty. Like I said, I didn't notice the smell, but the OH did. You are advised to wash with powder and no softener (softer effects the absorbance). If stained need a cold wash, then a hot wash. They are time-consuming but if you can get a good routine you'll be fine. If buying new, you'll need to wash up to 10 times before first use as well. Definitely do research. Little lamb are meant to be good for night nappies so ive a few of thouse and ive bambino mio as the day ones if we ever use them again..X

Hi Samantha. I did cloth nappies for my first and absolutely will do them again. A few observations - it’s much easier in summer because they dry outside so quickly. In winter it is harder as they can take a few days to dry because you can’t tumble dry cloth nappies as it ruins them -once I got into it I found it way easier than expected. It became second nature - I found all in ones much easier - get disposable liners (cheap and bio degradable) which mean the nappies don’t get as much poo on them - when washing you run a rinse cycle first then wash they sound much harder than they are in reality. If you buy them up front and get used to them they’re way easier than you think and I loved them. I didn’t use them until 4 months though as first few months baby is changing nappy so regularly. Final tip - remember it’s not all or nothing!. We used them in the day but not at night. At first I also used disposable when out and about then when got more confident used out and about

We've used reusable nappies since my LG was a month old and now we're due baby number 2 we won't have to buy any more nappies so it will definitely save us money. For cleaning/smell we just have a bucket with cold water some tea tree oil and put them in there we never notice a smell tbh. (Also if you use disposables the nappies go in a bin somewhere in your house unless you taken them straight outside) We don't have staining as we rinse on a cold cycle and then wash on a normal cycle. Sometimes there is a stain but usually comes out in a second wash. We did use the disposal liners initially but stopped after a few months. Agree with Rachel above. It doesn't have to be all or nothing when we go away we use disposables. And reusables are easier in practice than they sound. I'd definitely recommend :)

As others have said you might find there’s a local council scheme for renting or discounts so look into this!
