Family car

Hello, We're looking into getting 2 cars as it's needed where we live and we currently only have my husband's car which is a volkswagen scirrocco which we love but only has 3 doors and not ideal for baby/family car. My husband is planning to get a big car as he's tall and has knees issues so he prefers a more upright position for comfort. He also drives into London 5 days a week (45min journey). I need a smaller car as I'm small and will be mainly just doing shopping, trips to see friends and go to the gym...etc. My question is, what car do you have? We're both looking at suvs (smaller ones for me) but I'm wondering if I could do with a hatchback. Out of mums who have a hatchback, if you could afford an suv, would you get one or do you manage totally fine with a smaller car? We live in the countryside ish and would love a spacious car such as a vw t roc or Volvo XC40 but I'm just wondering if I'm being unreasonable as they are expensive cars (even though I could absolutely afford it on finance) or if that's a good choice. I never thought I'd be into cars that much but we've been indecisive for weeks now 🙈 wondering if we're being silly or are right to want a reliable, solid, spacious car for our family. Even though they would obviously be second hand. Husband will be looking at XC60 or Mercedes GLE (his dream car but again he feels a little unreasonable bless him even though we work very hard and never make big purchases otherwise, so I'm supportive of him) Thank you for your thoughts and please no judgement on this post.

We are looking to go to 2 cars due to my picking littleman up from school when my husband can't and helping my sister who lives in assisted living accommodation. a I am looking at a suv for the reason of height , as I have knee issues, so I need a car that's easy to get in and out of. I don't think you are being unreasonable I am actually saying to myself the same thing I know I can afford to buy a Volvo, however do I want to really spend that much money on 1 thing. However, I always think if you have worked hard to earn the money, then why not spend it

It’s completely understandable as we were the same! I was driving a little corsa, my husband was driving a Ford focus, and we decided that since we were planning to have a child (this was just before I fell pregnant 😂) one of us should have a bigger, more family orientated car for the space. I ended up getting a t-roc and was so glad I did! Especially when we went looking at car seats and prams and realised how much space we’re going to need. T-roc has great space in the back and deep boot space, but doesnt feel overly big or overwhelming to drive. My husband is keeping his focus as it doesn’t seem necessary to have 2 bigger cars. However I also have a friend who drives an Audi A3 sport back and she has 3 kids. Still great space and she loves it! It’s personal choice whether to get a bigger car, but you don’t necessarily need a big car for having kids. Plenty of parents have hatchbacks!

Thank you both so much for your replies, really helpful and kind. I have a very judgemental mother so always feeling a little weird asking about these things. 🙈 I'm glad everyone is roughly thinking the same and I'm glad you love your T roc Natalie! We have friends who have one too and they're not tall people but they love it and apparently it's very nice to drive as well. I really don't want something overwhelmingly big (while my husband does but hell be the one doing the long drives!) as I haven't been driving again for long and narrow roads still make me nervous. I think we'll have (another!) chat this weekend and decide between XC40 and t roc. I've also been looking at golf's but they're not *that* much cheaper so I might as well get a small suv 😂. Thanks again! Much appreciated x

Highly recommend the KIA Sportage, super reliable, 7yr warranty, great size and loads of tech for the price! I work for KIA so maybe I’m biased but we saw lots of people part exchange their Trocs, XC40’s and other higher end manufactures for the Sportage! It’s all personal preference and there’s no right or wrong decision, just whatever feels best to drive and is in your budget! X

@Chloe Hi Chloe! We've actually test drove a Kia Niro a while back when my husband was looking at fully electric (we're both self employed and had heard you get tax relief I think) anyway it was such a nice car too, very smooth! I'll check out the sportage as I do like the look of them although I don't need an electric as much as my husband who's looking at plug in hybrids. Must be very cool to work for Kia! 😍😁 X

@Aurélie No problem! Hope you find the right car either way. I also looked at the XC40 before I got my t-roc, the only thing that put me off was the price unfortunately as they are more expensive than the t-roc but they do look lovely to drive. And can’t go wrong with a Volvo!

@Natalie yesss! I'm exactly the same as you, price is just that much more that makes me go arrrrgh is that silly, do I really need it need it? 😂 Also I'm driving a vw at the moment and love it so thinking I could stay with vw as I'm used to how it drives etc. I'm conscious these are very "1st world problems" and feel bad about it haha but glad some people have been thinking about best cars for the safety and enjoyment of their family 😊 xx

@Aurélie haha first world problems are still problems 😂 don’t worry! Yes if you love VW, it’s so easy to stay 😂 also incredibly easy to park, I’m very nervous with parking so that was a big bonus for me. But good luck! Xx

@Natalie you're selling it to me! 😂 I HATE parking and I'm so bad at it still ha! So that's good to know. Anyway thank you so much for all your insights, super helpful and appreciated x

@Aurélie the Niro is lovely too! Sportage is just that bit bigger. The newer Hybrid power trains are amazing aswell; really good on fuel economy! X

I test drove a plug in niro a month ago and loved it. As someone who has driven regularly I felt comfortable behind the wheel and felt I could drive it on a regular basis no problem. I would also be able to fit littleman and his car seat and still have enough room for the weekly shop

@Adeola (Ola) I'm glad you found it comfortable and spacious too! 😊
