Consultant and scan

I have just been to my 28 week midwife appointment and every time I've went to any appointment after my booking appointment they ask if I have seen a consultant yet, I've said no and haven't been told the reason. So today she said right well I will book you in for the clinic for your 32 week and when I've looked it's a scan and consultant - I said oh I'm getting a scan? And she just replied yeah then you can speak to the consultant after, but I'm still not understanding the reason! Anyone else had this? There is no concerns for baby growth, heartbeat etc only thing I have is I'm borderline high blood pressure and have a monitor home but it has been reading normal recently and that my BMI is over 30.

I have regular growth scans and consultant appointments just because I'm high risk of pre eclampsia due to higher BMI despite my blood pressure being fine. I've now been moved to a different clinic because I've now got GD but the extra scans and consultants have been part of the plan long before that was a problem. It's most likely nothing major I just take it as at least I get to see my little boy more often 😊

Hi there - yep same my end (although my BP has been a little high continuously so I have already seen a consultant once), you will get an extra growth scan and then immediately the next day usually they schedule the consultant appointment for discussion. They take BP readings very seriously so even if normal at home, if it's even mildly high in appointments they book an extra scan. I am 25 weeks but have an extra scan (+ consultant appt) booked for October, November and December. I wouldn't worry, it's just that high(er) blood pressure *COULD* be a sign of early pre-eclampsia which is why they scan again. ❤️❤️❤️

Yes! It’s been a nightmare. I’ve seen the consultant twice and seeing them again on Tuesday. I’ll be 32 weeks next week. No one knew why I was seeing consultant …. Midwife, consultant or sonographer 😂😂 one consultant said my asthma, there was no notes and in classed at low risk! Anyway we’ve finally worked out that it’s because I lost so much blood first labour! So I have to go discuss risk factors over a birth centre or hospital! But it’s not been clear!! Xx

Thanks ladies! I have said the same I'm glad to get to see the wee one again when I've not expected too, I know it's not their fault but I've seen a different midwife each time so it seems they weren't even sure why I was getting a consultant either, which I think was why they couldn't give me any reason 🤣 as long as baby is healthy and they are happy with me I don't mind at all! Just being my first time I just one of those ones I need to know why yo understand lol xx

I was told in my last pregnancy that they’d changed the cut of for being classed as ‘high risk’ due to BMI, it went from 35 to 30, so that could be why? Once you’re classed as high risk, you get growth scans and a consultant apt afterwards for them to discuss. That’s how it works in our trust anyway. I guess if you have high blood pressure that’s just another potential risk factor which would mean you’d have consultant led care alongside the normal midwife care x

Have you asked directly why they are booking the consultant appt for you? If not then I would ask. You don’t want to sit ‘on a conveyor belt of care’ !
