Constipation

My baby hasn’t had a poo in over 24 hours. She’s just woken up absolutely screaming and inconsolable. She has a bottle an hour ago and not showing any sides of being hungry she’s also had her nappy changed. I think she’s in pain from not being able to poo. She’s been pretty gassy tonight and every time I’ve checked her she’s not pooed. Anyone have any tips. Midwife isn’t concerned until she’s not pooed in 4 days 😭 any tips to help my 11 day old go to the toilet or help with the discomfort she is in?

You might find it weird but for my gassy baby i used asafoetida. Take 1/4th teaspoon of asafoetida,Dissolved it in 1 teaspoon of water and apply it on baby's belly. It usually does the trick.

Yeah it’s normal for baby’s not to poop every day! And they can be fussy for a million reasons so you probably don’t want to do anything aggressive to try to her to poop because it may well not be the issue. Peddling out her legs is a gentle thing you can do that would help with constipation or gas pain.

^^ this! I just saw my sons pediatrician today and he said not pooping is only a concern once baby goes past day 5!

My 3 week old does this all the time 🥲, he will go a few days without pooping and then will suddenly have poopy diaper, I think the longest he has gone is almost 3 days. It also depends if baby is breastfed per his pediatrician! Breastfeeding babies will have a lot less poopy diapers than formula babies. Hope it resolves soon for yall🥹

Asafoetida is a miracle rub on baby belly and feet as well

I don’t think she’s old enough for this but in a few months you can have this in your back pocket, prune juice. Do those bicycle kicks!

I feel for you. I know everyone is like it’s normal for them not to poo for days, but if they are in pain with it, I personally can’t think it’s right to leave them. I think the main issue is likely to be trapped wind, which makes it painful. Annoyingly in my experience this can get worse as poo sits in gut. Things I have done to help relieve are - bicycle legs (60 to 120 not just a couple); tummy massage for wind (look online); warm bath (this really helps with pain); Gripe water (as well as helping wind has a mild laxative affect); sitting them in chair that vibrates; give a few sips of cooled boiled water between feeds (up to 30mls max); suppositories (1g glycerin infant - can buy online and very easy to use and effective - baby will poo with these).

As with the above advice, keep in the back of your mind cluster feeding. During developmental/growth stages babies can easily feed again within the hour. Even if you have just fed them, if you're having difficulty finding what's wrong, they're clean, dry, warm, just offer a top up. Could very well be cluster feeding at 11 days old, there's so much going on as a newborn! If you have tried other settling techniques, and nothing is working, just try feeding again.

Ita normal for babies to go without pooping as long as it's not 5 or more days. You can do tummy massages, bicycle movements with legs to help any gas too
