Babies with reflux

Question for moms with babies that have reflux. My little boy is 5 months old and the last few weeks has been bringing up his milk more so than before. We went to the health visitor to check his weight, which was absolutely fine (17lb 7oz) so she wasn't too concerned about his reflux. I have an appointment tomorrow with the Dr but I'm just wondering what symptoms did your little one have with reflux and have you been prescribed anything to help with it? We have tried everything, sitting him up whilst feeding and after feeding. Burping him throughput been fed, which he has a meltdown because he wants his milk. Any advise is welcome at this point

My little ones reflux was awful when he was first born up until I'd say 5 months ish. Had to fight to be listened to and finally got prescribed carobel which has been literally amazing, he hardly ever brings anything up now. Some days are still worse than others but it's so much better

@Sophie it's awful isn't it. Nothing will settle him, I'm constantly having to change him cause of him been sick. I'm hoping the Dr will help tomorrow, it's horrible seeing them cry all the time. Then I can't get anything done as all he wants then is to be held. That's good to know, at least you have managed to get something to help settle it x

@Alex yeah it's horrible. We were given gaviscon first which made it so much worse! Had to fight for carobel and when they eventually listened his reflux improved pretty much straight away x

My baby has had reflux since birth. We really struggled to get him to gain weight because of it so we were prescribed omeprazole when he was a couple of months old. He’s now 8 months and since starting solids it’s definitely improved a bit but it’s still not great! We have tried absolutely anything and everything and nothing really worked for us! So in our situation I think it’s just a case of waiting for him to grow out of it. Drs have advised if it’s still bad when he’s 1 years old they will investigate further but I’m hoping we are almost through it. It’s so tough!!!

@Sophie oh no, glad you have got him sorted. Fingers crossed they help my little boy tomorrow x

I got Gaviscon sachets to start. Did try for omeprazole when it got really bad but was told doctors are reluctant to give it as it can cause bone problems in babies. My LG is 10 months and still on them but no where near as much sick now but is if we miss a dose. Has your baby being losing weight or is it just the sickness that’s bothering you? xx

My little girl's reflux really only started to improve when she started on solids. Luckily for you, that isn't too far away now! 🤞🏻

@Paige his weight is fine I had him checked the other day. It's more the fact that he seems to be in pain with it. I can cope with the sick but sometimes it can be a lot he brings up. @Katie I've been hoping to hold out until he is on solids but he just seems so uncomfortable with it, crying after his bottle, sometimes during his bottle and then bringing quite a bit of milk up after feeding x

Our son has been on medication since he was 2 months old. He was started on Ranitidine, which is 3x/day (not ideal since it had to be kept cold), and then they switched us to Prevacid (once a day and shelf stable). He now at 7 months gets his medicine every day, and has to be burped and held upright for a half hour after every feed. I also was told to go dairy free while breastfeeding him. He is a different baby with these things put in place.

@Amanda thank you, I have wondered if he has a milk allergy. He is formula fed, as both me and his dad as babies had to have dairy free milk formula and my partners son from a previous relationship has to have lactose free milk as a baby x

@Alex oh yeh I totally get it. We actually started on solids at 5.5 months as she was dropping centiles on milk. Best decision we could have made. It's so hard isn't it?

@Alex we were exactly the same. I took pictures and everything but because our LG wasn’t losing weight, they said no to Omeprazole… Gaviscon Infant definitely works for us but as soon as we miss a dose, she can sometimes end up paying for it later on in the day xx

@Katie it is really hard. My little boy is bang on 75th centile when he was weighed. @Paige oh really, hopefully they can help us tomorrow. It's the painful crying I hate x

My baby has / had terrible silent reflux. We feed in an elevated side lying position (have a search of the position ). The reason we went down the medication route was because he was literally refusing bottles. Gp may prescribe gaviscon. It worked for us but only for a few weeks and then he became fussy at his feeds, crying , refusing the bottles again we have been using omeprazole and it’s been the only thing thats worked xx

Alos just to add you know your baby, gps are so bad with stuff like this if they are gaining weight. Unless you have baby that screams during / after feeds nobody can ever understand what it is like xx

My baby had reflux from birth. Eventually we got gaviscon at 3 months and it really helped and he became an absolute chonk in a month 😂 I think he probably should have always been a larger baby but dipped down a lot after birth (still healthy and gaining) due to the reflux. Eventually, when his oesophagus grew a bit and he ate more solids, he stopped throwing up. We never really had issues with constipation of anything.

@Amy thank you I will have a look at that. If it helps until he is on solids I will be happy. It's the screaming after bottles and him been uncomfortable that I don't like. It's just gradually got worse cause his weight gain isn't the problem lol. He is a really chunky boy aha x

@Sarah this seems to be the thing I'm seeing, that everyone has had to fight to get their babies something to help. Oh bless him, our little boy is chunky, he was 6lb 15oz at birth when they told me he was going to be big. I hope we can get him sorted tomorrow x

@Alex it’s distressing when they’re like that, something I will never forget! It took us about 45 minuets to calm my little boy one time. The HV were really good with us she said it’s like heartburn for them they wrote in my red book a couple of times because the gp was so bad xx

@Amy that was like me this morning, he's must have been crying for about an hour after his bottle. The HV has put it down in his book when I saw her the other day. It's horrible when we get heartburn so I can only imagine what it would be like for a baby, it must be awful for them xx
