Digestion Issues? EBF.

Hi, I’ve got a 5 week old and I EBF, but whenever she feeds she seems to be uncomfortable and pulls her legs up or kicks and goes a little red in the face, she then almost never settles after a feed and it can take hours to wind her, settle her, get her to drop off to have to start the process all over again because it’s feeding time again. Needless to say, she also barely sleeps because of this which means we’re getting no sleep. Has anyone else had experience of this?

Yes. My daughter is 4 weeks and has also been like this for about two weeks now. I’m formula feeding only. Currently trying infant gaviscon and just started gripe water, and these seems to be helping. Worth going to the GP to get advice and try something. Also consider dentinox to help with winding. We’re having horrendous nights too but slightly better last night after a few days using both!

@Kirsty thank you. I’m thinking GP might have to be the next step as I’m at a loss now and getting no sleep and she looks so uncomfortable. I hadn’t thought of gripe water so will also give this a go!

Yes I did. My baby had this for 2 months from birth. It was wind, nothing helped so had to wait it out. It all got better when she was around 10 weeks old. I didn’t sleep for those 2 solid months and I’m a single parent so I know it’s hard. It does get easier ❤️

@Dreia this is good to know - thank you! The sleep deprivation is killing me. It’s just horrible hearing the cry and seeing the discomfort.

@Heather I know it’s the worst when you feel so helpless and they are so small 🥺 sleep will come soon hang in there. Try and nap when baby naps if possible ❤️

Sounds like infant dyschezia. My baby has it too and she’s 9 weeks tomorrow so hoping it starts to ease soon

Definitely sounds like wind. Infacol before every feed has helped our little man a lot. Does she have any other symptoms? Rashes? Vomiting? If so, could it be CMPA?

@Sharon CMPA is extremely rare. I think people are a little over obsessed about CMPA on this app. I’m not aiming this at you but seems like every post regarding wind/gas which is totally normal for a newborn, has the mention of CMPA in the chat. Although potentially necessary, CMPA alternative formulas are awful and full of carcinogens. I wish more people thought about that before running towards a self diagnosis and just waiting it out to see if it is just wind etc. Not saying all but most. After all, CMPA is just a possibility and not able to be fully tested or diagnosed.

@Dreia Well, I kind of agree with you, which is why I asked if there were any other symptoms. I don’t want anyone to feel bad for feeding their babies formula however - I’ve done it myself when I literally can’t keep up with the demands of an extremely hungry baby. However, if OP did suspect CMPA, I might have suggested cutting out dairy for a few weeks as opposed to switching to formula altogether.

Dentinox! Try Dentinox if you haven't. One syringe before a feed, stronger than infacol and has worked its magic for us, same issue your bubba is having. Try a warm flannel over the belly/bowl area as it helps settle pains. X

@Sharon I was referring to CMPA formula and I mentioned it not to shame anyone. It’s just a known fact that CMPA formulas have terrible ingredients in them. I was given them to feed my baby too and she was combi fed so I’m not turning my nose up at anyone for doing the same. I think many mums start cutting out dairy etc too soon, wind/gas issues last up until baby is 3 months old. Of symptoms persist after that then yes explore other avenues. It takes 4 weeks for dairy to leave the body completely. I’m only speaking from experience, wish I hadn’t tested all these different things on my baby unnecessarily which are full of chemicals but I also know how hard it is when you’re in that situation and helpless.

@Emily thanks for these tips, will give them a go!!!
