How do you feel about people who chose not to evacuate hurricane areas so they could film the experience?

This is a discussion I've been seeing on tiktok after a woman ignored warnings, stayed home, and filmed multiple tiktoks of everything.

I've seen some stories of people who chose to leave their home during the flood and get in the water BY CHOICE and get electrocuted because they didn't think about all the down power lines and phone lines and stuff pumping electricity into the water 🙄 I don't feel bad, it's just darwinism 😂

Some people don’t have the ability whether it be resources, finances, support or transportation to evacuate

@I'esha I completely understand that, this poll is just about the ones who stayed to film but had the means to evacuate, they chose not to.

I went to college in the Midwest and we would have “tornado parties” we’d go outside on balconies/ patios during tornado sirens and get drunk…young and dumb! Now I’m in my 30’s and last time I heard a tornado siren my hubby, baby and dog hid in an interior bathroom with at least24 hours worth of supplies!! To each their own 🤷‍♀️

I think they’re selfish as fuck. I really hope emergency services or good samaritans don’t put their lives at risk to help stupid ignorant people who had the means to leave for safety

@Allison I'll admit I've chilled on the balcony before during a siren but I always looked up the tornado touchdown points before doing it, that was living in the city tho where tornadoes don't really get that far, but living in the country I went into the basement immediately every time, a tornado can travel a lot faster with lots of open space 😭

as someone who lived in florida. your luck of getting out of state or to a safer area before the storm hits is about as good as the luck of staying home and taking shelter. i do feel bad for the reporters who stay to get coverage because that is what a lot of locals use to see how their areas been effected when the evacuate. we tried evacuating one year and saw the traffic heading north and turned around since the lineup wasn’t budging and thank god we did because within HOURS the express way was flooded.

Depends. If they are just staying to prove they are stronger than the storm & doing their best to stay safe on their own then I commend them honestly LOL more power to you if you wanna play games with Mother Nature when you had an escape option. But if they are playing stupid games while sticking around; I am not shocked or disappointed when they win stupid prizes.

My dad and his family have never evacuated for a hurricane. He always tries to help everyone get prepared and just rides it out. He did send my mom and us kids away when Katrina hit, but he definitely didn't stay for clout. I definitely think it's dumb to only stay for the videos, but most people who do stuff like that are dumb enough to get killed someway to get the views so it's whatever. But a lot of people have to stay so they might as well try to get the views, thats what some of my cousins do 🤷‍♀️

The woman who stayed and filmed tiktoks has been getting a lot of criticism. She, her husband, and dog stayed. They had their generator running while it was inside and sitting in water, even after hearing that their neighbor was electrocuted so badly he needed medical help. They stayed until they couldn't anymore and got on a boat with other neighbors who had stayed until it was no longer possible. On the boat they were playing party music and drinking and laughing about it. The woman then asks one of her neighbors about him finding a drowned woman that he had to help remove from the water with rescuers, I think this is the part where she received the most criticism because of how casually she asked about it and how she didn't seem to feel bad about it at all and it came across that she just wanted him to tell her so it could be part of her hurricane tiktok series.

I ride out every hurricane bc I’m always too broke to leave and I never have a functioning car lmao 😭💀 I do make cool videos but I don’t stay in the hurricane to exclusively record it’s crazy ppl stay in danger to make lil tik toks 🤣

I know not everyone has the ability to get evacuated, and everyones situation is different, so maybe that changes my opinion. However, I find it incredibly selfish if you choose to stay just bc you wanna make tik.toks then end up.needing and calling for emergency assistance bc now your putting 1st responders at harms way that is someone's mom dad husband wife sister ect that might not make it home.to their family trying to save your dumbass

I think they are stupid but I still feel bad for them. It would be so hard to leave my house. So many memories it was crush me. I would do it though and I still feel bad for those that stayed. It’s a little harsh to not feel bad

@I'esha Uber offered free hurricane rides to local free shelters that did welcome animals. There’s usually always an option to leave or go somewhere safe.

@Lara I see it as very selfish as well. There will be responders that go to help people that didn’t have a choice to leave, and the selfish ones who could have and chose not to will now require assistance, making the whole process much longer. 😒

I still hope they don’t get hurt. But I think it’s really irresponsible and I feel bad for their loved ones!

People will do the most unhinged nonsense for attention on the internet :/

It wasn't a hurricane but I watched an interview once with someone who survived a massive mudslide and had a friend who chose not to evacuate (was perfectly able to, but chose not to.) I'm not sure what the friend's reasoning was but their young daughter (if I remember correctly she was something like 10 or 11) was killed in it because they stayed. I think it's idiotic either way but at least if you insist on doing it and you're only risking your own life that's your choice. Just don't risk anybody else's in the process

Who cares.. stupidity seems like the norm these days.. I don't try to understand it or care

Some people don’t have a place to run to.

I think they are stupid. Full stop.

From what I am seeing in North Carolina, these evacuations are coming a bit too late. If something happened I think the blame’s on the government for not issuing warnings sooner. They legit have made curfew where my mother is but no one has power, so how could anyone know?

It’s not that I don’t feel bad for them if god forbid something bad happens to them, but I do think it’s incredibly selfish bc they can end up putting others in danger if for example a rescue is required.

@Rachel that is a good point. Didn’t even think about that. Thanks for the perspective
