Health visitor

Does anyone know why I've been booked in for a home visit before his birth? I never had it with my first so just confused. Is it a new thing?

yeah they like to come and introduce themselves and ask about where baby will sleep to advise on safe sleep setups etc

With my first mine was a phone call and they basically told me about the service they provide. Haven't heard anything for this baby though.

i think its normal x

I have my health visitor coming in October to give me baby red book

An antenatal visit is totally standard - I work in the HV service

Great thanks everyone! X

What month of pregnancy are they doing this?

I never saw anyone from the HV before until expecting my 4th 🤣 I was so confused. I still don't get their reason as to why cause they literally just sat in my lounge and asked how pregnancy was going... then said someone would be over when baby was x days old xx

@Jess she's coming over on Monday when ill be 30 + 2 unsure if it's the same time for everyone x

@Billie oh is that it...bit pointless then least it's a quick visit😂 xx

@Chloe hmm that's weird. Il be 30+1 on Monday lol. I guess I will wait for some phone call then! Can't wait....

It’s normal, it’s just to introduce themselves and let you know what you can expect from them. It’s better to do it now than have a stranger visit once baby’s born, to build an initial rapport 😊

Different areas have different reasons for doing antenatal health visitor visits. Where I live it’s because there have been additional concerns in the pregnancy (mental health/safeguarding etc) other areas offer visits to everyone in the antenatal period, some areas don’t offer anything antenatal. It’s also optional and you can decline

We usually cover safe bottle prep/responsive feeding, safe sleep, safety around animals, possible contraception after birth, mental wellbeing, support networks, breastfeeding if you are planning on it, that sort of stuff

Yeah, I was offered one at my girl’s 2 year review and I said only if it’s a good use of time. I’m a 2nd time mum, I’ll be working until 38 weeks and my last few interactions with HV have been useless and at inappropriate times for working parents. Happy for them to come when baby is born to do their thing but not when I’m fit to pop, still working and preparing for Xmas and birth

I've always had a visit pre baby, going all the way back to 19 years ago, with my eldest . They basically come, give you some leaflets, info on feeding, check you've got a " safe sleep space" and tell you never to shake the baby
