Experience with epidural

Hey moms, I just wanted to hear your experiences with getting an epidural. Was it a good choice or not? I've heard some people mention having back pain for a long time after delivery. Also, what kind of care is needed after delivery if you’ve had an epidural?

I had the epidural. It took 7 attempts to Get it into my spine (first 5 done by a woman who wasn’t experienced). So that was kinda traumatic but it was worth it. When it worked, oh it was great. I managed to even go sleep for an hour or so. I didn’t experience any long term back pain like some women get. I was sore for a while after having my back constantly stabbed and I couldn’t walk for hours even after birth because it worked so well!

I was already 8cms when I had mine (if I’d known how far along i was I wouldn’t have bothered) it worked perfectly, I could still move around and even went to the toilet by myself! I had to have an episiotomy and suction in the end so glad I had it. I had to have it topped up to full spinal block afterwards to have my placenta removed too so was glad it was already in. I did have some back pain after birth but it wasn’t at the epidural site so think it may have just been normal back pain. It went off after a few days. No additional care is required really

I loved it! I was able to sleep a little and was in labour for 24 hours so unsure how I would have coped without it. I could still walk (needed support though). I had to have a c-section in the end and they was able to add more of the epidural to fully numb me rather than having to go back into my spine. This was 7 days ago and still having back pain, but hoping it goes as I heal x

I had to be held by 5 people, due to contractions, to get the epidural in situ. But one in it was great, very effective. I had no pain afterwards at all, perhaps a slight ache but after birth not much didn't ache! a slight scratch from needle entry but that's to be expected too.

Had twice and happy. No issues.

I had an epidural. The first one didn’t work (apparently this happens in 1 in 8 ppl), but they did it again and that one worked an absolute treat!! I was able to get some sleep which was amazing after a 55hr induction! It made the delivery such an enjoyable experience for me. Afterwards my back was a bit tender due to bruising at the epidural site but it didn’t last long, a few days and wasn’t that bad.

Bloody loved it. Got to 5cm in the pool and hed gone back to back (can’t explain that pain). After getting the epidural I literally (all be it quite high on gas & air and the ep) said “is this how people without anxiety feel?”. I was SO anxious and anti epidural but honestly it made the whole experience enjoyable!! You can still feel your body and legs and you control how much goes in/if you want topping up. I had back pain for about a week but it was more like bruising and now im fine (im 2 months pp) The only thing i will say is even when you feel amazing 1-5days pp REST. I was buzzing around the house loving life and split my episiotomy stitches :))) (little man was 9lb2 hence the cut)

Best decision ever, to have the epidural. As soon as it kicked in it was heaven. No pain afterwards x loved it

I’m a UK midwife (not sure where you are), I had one with my 2nd baby due to being on the hormone drip - absolutely the right choice for me then but the other x2 I went into spontaneous labour it wouldn’t have been, I managed fine without it. If I needed an induction this time I probably would get it again. Aftercare - I take people’s epidurals out for them after birth, you should be able to weight bare/walk after an hour or 2. The following day you’re reviewed by the anaesthetist to make sure you’re ok, mobilising well, no side effects etc
