HCG blood tests UK

People in the UK where are you getting blood tests for HCG? Called my GP and receptionist was quite condescending like oh hun we don't do that pregnancy tests are enough. Kind of speaking to me like I'm stupid but everything I've seen is people going to GP for blood tests? I've sent of referral to midwives but obviously not heard back just yet so don't know what to do?

Hey, where in the UK do you live? I got mine done privately in a clinic just outside London. There are many clinics that would do it privately and give you your results within 24 hours.

Manchester! With my last pregnancy I was offered blood tests that's why I was so shocked...

Ah, I wasn’t offered blood tests on the NHS. They told me the same, that a pregnancy test is enough and that they only offer a Hcg test now if they suspect an ectopic pregnancy

Yeh GP don’t do anything anymore in terms of pregnancy, some people may be going to the EPAU for HCG blood tests but where I live they are very reluctant to do them and will only really do it for suspected miscarriage You basically just get a positive test then wait till 8-10 weeks to see the community midwife where she will do your bloods x

Early pregnancy units, however they normally only see people who have had previous miscarriages or issues. Defo worth contacting them and you could just say you’re concerned? Xxx

I called my local hospital’s early pregnancy unit and asked to go in for bloods, I have had a previous ectopic so I’m not sure if that would make a difference but it’s worth a try?

@Charlotte that absolutely makes a difference. Defo push to get seen. Just explain when you had an ectopic as future pregnancy’s are now classed as high risk with you. You should therefore get extra scans etc. if you wanna message me I can give you all the info xxxx

It’s not something they offer on the NHS I believe, you’d probably have to go private. And GP’s usually have nothing to do with pregnancy anymore it’s all through your midwives/hospital so contact your EPU and they may be able to get you a blood test. Otherwise they usually just wait till your booking midwife appointment to take bloods x

@Becca they do offer this on the nhs especially if you have had previous issues. It’s so sad nobody knows about how epu’s work dxx

@Jasmine of course if you have a reason it’s offered but it’s not standard practice. I’m a student midwife and in my trust you need a history of miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy or have to have experienced some pain or bleeding to get referred for a HCG blood test 🫶 xx
