How do the midwives know the position of the baby on the day we go to the hospital?

Have been thinking about this as we only have 2 scans through the NHS how will they know what’s the actual position of the baby in the day that we go into labour? Do they do a scan in the hospital? I’m starting to get a bit anxious with all of these silly questions

Whenever I have a midwife appt or trip to triage/pre planned heartbeat checks and they feel they usually tell me his rough position. They said harder to be 100 at this stage but easier bigger baby gets.

Yeah they do the same to me, I was just wondering how they will know 100% without seeing the baby actually, especially in the day that we give birth

Hmmm yes not sure. I'm guessing they don't know 100% unless your breech later and then you get more checks to see if the baby moves. But not sure how the other way works if they suddenly moved from head down to breach. Hopefully someone will come along to answer. I have very regular scans so I'd imagine I'll pretty much know.

They can tell just by feeling your bump They told me within seconds at my week 31 and week 34 midwife appt that she was head down… and told me where her bum and feet were… if they’re concerned about anything they’ll do a scan - they sent me for a growth one today just as they thought she might have stopped growing and she was fine 🥰

Hi! Midwife here. Abdominal palpation is how we determine the position of your baby, after having so much training it’s very obvious whether it’s a head or not in the pelvis. If there’s any uncertainty then we can refer the woman for a presentation scan x

@Megan thank you so much for clarifying that, sometimes we don’t really understand because it’s out of our expertise! My midwife already told me the baby is head down so hopefully she won’t change position 🤞

I was told my baby was head down for a while. Then I had to go for a growth scan as my bump hadn’t gotten any bigger from my previous appointment. Turns out she wasn’t head down at all at it was her bum in my pelvis. All the doctors and midwife’s said they were shocked as they 100% would have said it was her head 🤦🏻‍♀️

My friend was told her baby was head down by the midwife. She went into labour two days later and baby was breach coming out foot first. So I’ve also been wondering about this!!!

I think I might do a presentation scan at some point later on, probably around 36/37 weeks! Better safe than sorry I guess

The midwife can feel the position of the baby by putting their hands on your tummy. If they are concerned they can book additional scans!

Nice excuse to see baby again! But it will have to be private, you can’t just choose to have one on the Nhs unfortunately x
