Short Long Bones

Hello! Does anyone have any experience or knowledge on short long bones? Baby has been diagnosed with this, doctor is saying it’s not going to be dwarfism or a skeletal deformation and most likely just be a small baby but then I’m bang on in the middle of my growth chart so I’m super confused!

Both my girls had short long bones noted while I was pregnant, and both were born perfectly healthy and normal weight/height (7lb 4oz and 7lb 7oz). The growth charts look at 3 measurements (head, abdomen and long bones) and average out across the 3 to give you the growth percentile. Means you can be in the middle of the growth charts even if one measurement is small, if another is larger it’ll average out. My girls are both average height for their age but have a long torso, very similar to myself, and shorter legs. I’ve got good at rolling up trousers! My 4 year old finally seems to be getting huge long legs with her last growth spurt. I wouldn’t worry too much as long as the doctors say your ok 😊

@Ruth that’s great to know! My first is above average in height and she was 8lb 6oz with no notes at all so it’s throwing me off being told this for my second! I’ll practise my sewing skills then for trousers 😂

yep my baby was diagnosed with short femur length at my 20 week scan, abdominal and head circumference were between 30-40th centile but femur below the 4th which has brought the overall average down to the 6th centile. They have put me on aspirin and booked me in for a Doppler scan at 23 weeks to check my placenta function. How many weeks are you? x

@Hayley I’m 31 weeks! Head and abdominal are 30-40th aswell for me but arms and legs are being classed as under 1% (whatever that means). They are saying all the measurements are relative though and nothing should be “out of proportion”. I’ve got constant growth scans now until birth but that’s all they’ve done for me x

and has your baby always had these measurements or have some changed? I’m hoping at my next scan the legs have caught up with it being still so early 🤣
