Childminder holiday pay

Hi there, I’m scaling back up to work and so am looking to send my baby to a childminder a couple of days a week from November. The childminder I’m thinking of going with has told me that when she is on holiday clients are required to pay half fees — and that she takes six weeks holiday a year. I totally understand that she should be paid over holidays but continuing to pay for six weeks a year seems quite a lot. I was wondering if anyone knew if this is standard or no? Thanks so much in advance!

This isn’t standard across the board - my mum is a childminder of 30 years and doesn’t work this way. Her process is if the setting is open then you pay for your contracted hours, so if you’re on holiday or your baby is sick you still pay but not if she’s away on holiday or sick. I think more recently some childminders have started doing what you’ve mentioned to combat the downsides of being self employed!

Thank you!

My old childminder did this! I don’t think it’s uncommon. Another childminder I interviewed did not. I ended up going with the childminder that did charge the extra as she was a lot better

It sounds a little odd as why should you pay when they cannot provide a service. Saying that, our nursery charges for bank holidays and they aren’t even open… the whole system makes no sense 😂

Not in our case, no - when our childminder is on holiday or sick, she doesn't charge us. When our little one is sick we get charged a normal rate of course, and when we're on holiday and give her a heads up, she charges us a holiday rate. She's very fair, I don't know if that approach is a standard x
