So I actually had something similar where they thought I was having a big baby I went 40+4 and she was 6lb12 š
some midwifeās measure differently - if youāve had the same midwife the whole time it might be how they measure. iāve always had the same midwife and she kept saying i was measuring small, then one week she was off, and another midwife measured me - and she was like ānope youāre measuring big!ā and sent me off for a growth scan. the growth scan showed that i was measuring big, and they explained that some midwifeās measure right down to your pelvic bone (which i think is right), but my original midwife would always measure slightly above it! try not to worry too much and hopefully the scan will give you some reassurance. as a heads up, when i had my scan they confirmed he was still measuring big but said they had no concerns and sent me on my way x
Bump measurements are an inaccurate way to measure the actual size of baby! Please try not to worry! Both my babies measured off the chart and Iāve had 2 babies weighing 6lb12oz and 6lb exactly both born at full term xx
To add to others comments here of their babies been off the chart.. My baby was on the chart.. no emergencies scans and he was 10lbs 10oz so please donāt panic x
Donāt stress about size I was c section (due to my health issues couldnāt deliver naturally) and had it brought forward cause they measured her at top end of the scale, she was 7lb7oz born. Itās seems to be a very rough indication, I found loads of people who had been told wrong weight. My sis was so worried as they said her baby was tiny and under weight, he was nearly 9lb born. Defo think about asking for someone else to look into it
The same thing happened to me and they tried to scare me into having more scan towards the end (which I refused) because big or small the baby was coming and I was already told he was measuring big half way through my pregnancy. My belly was measuring off the charts literally no where on the sheet to even possibly chart how big I was. Random strangers would ask if I was having twins and I just went along with it sometimes š I wanted a natural birth and they told me to also have a back up plan in case I had to have c-section which mentally I was preparing for given the size they were telling me the baby was measuring- in the end I had a natural birth and baby was born average size completely healthy and normal. They had got it all wrong and most of it was just amniotic fluid. The same thing happened with my second pregnancy and the midwife pointed out that I may have a condition called Polyhydramnios where I have too much amniotic fluid.
If it makes you feel better they told me I was having a 12lb baby with a giant head. He came out at 6lb8oz with a tiny head! Try not to stress and I hope it all goes well for you. Hopefully baby is still head down and there is nothing to worry about. Best of luck with your delivery. Xx
Its usually never accurate in more cases than not. If it was an āemergencyā you would be having surgery not here talking to us so its just coercion of something that has a tiny chance to be accurate š and why cant you birth a big baby? Why do they think you cant push a baby out? Try to get facts and answers to their estimates and guesses. Listen to your instincts, second opinion, talk to-look at the info from kemibirthjoyjohnson The amount of family members and friends i have heard this from and the opposite. I really donāt know what they look at but ive never known it to be right š š¤·š»āāļøš
Donāt think of it as an āemergencyā scan. Itās just to check the measurements and position of your baby more effectively. Fundal measurements arenāt great.
The scan will help give a bit more of an accurate idea of their growth. My bump was small, they stopped bothering to measure me because it always came up with a warning I was too small. I had scans every 2 weeks from 26 weeks. My bump was lower then the 5th centile but baby was between 30 and 40th baised on scans. My last scan at 39 weeks she was 7lb. Born at 40+2 at 7lb 2.
I was measuring at 40 at 35 weeks, went for a growth scan and he was right on track for his gestation. He was born at 36+6 due to PROM and was only 5lb 13
I measured off the chart at 36 weeks also and was sent for a scan. Also couldnāt determine his position. Scan showed he was head down and starting to engage but he was otherwise in an awkward position and was protruding himself so far out which made my bump really big and wonky! His position was super painful! He was healthy 9lbs 6oz at 41+2. Hope everything is ok for you!!
They did this to me aswell, told me I was gonna have a ginormous baby.. I gave birth at 40+3 and he was 7lbs 14oz so he is actually only on the 25th centile xx
Mine was the same, he was 8lb6oz born at 37 weeks exactly, apparently I was on track for a 10lb baby

Thank you everyone! All these answers have actually made me feel so so much better. I donāt think the midwife was trying to worry me but that in turn made me worry because she was down playing it, probably just the language used like āemergencyā scan and āoff the chartsā I just probably am overthinking. Iām going to try relax and not them them pressure me into any decision, Iāll definitely look for a second opinion if their judgement is saying for an early induction, and wonāt let them worry me into one. As my original plan was an at home water birth so I think I was probably more worried thinking there may be complications if heās too big. But seems on here that more often than not theyāre quite inaccuratešš Thanks everyone
I was measuring in the 98th-99th percentile. Had a growth scan at 37+3 and he was measuring in the 84th at 7.2lbs. Born at 40+2 at 8.9lbs. Try not to worry too much
Measurements and scans can be way off donāt rely on those. The only accurate info is measuring and weighing the baby when itās actually born. Some babies were estimated 9-10lbs and only born 7-8 etc Even if baby is big, women have been birthing big babies for centuries. My friend pushed out a 10lbs baby vaginally
"Emergency" just means "priority" rather than routine here I think. Hope all goes well x

Ask for second opinion and another scan. If your baby is that big, it could be that they got the due date wrong, the measurement wrong orā¦ that your baby is that big. However scans are highly subjective and itās your right to say no / ask for more info before committing. It could be that another person doing the scan will measure diffferently, at least that will give you peace of mind that he is indeed very big. Ask also why him being so big is an issue for your particular condition, may be you / your partner are very tall so your baby is too, or may be youāve got GDā¦ size can be lots of different things. But donāt be scared to push back and ask for more info / rescan is the bottom line
