In first pregnancy, do you have anymore scans after 20 weeks?

You only get 2 with the NHS. Unless it’s requested from a midwife or consultant for any problems or issues they are concerned about. I have high BMI & family history of medical issues so have a 28 week & 32 week already pre booked ahead.

Wow that’s so surprising! So will it only be if for example I stop feeling baby move etc?

They usually just monitor the heart rate for reduced movement. You’ll get extra scans if bump isn’t growing how they expect or if they find your placenta to be in the wrong place at your 20 week scan. You can pay privately if you do want more scans x

they rarely do scans for reduced movements its just monitoring. The only reasons you’d be given extra scans is if there was an issue such as growth scans

I went in four times due to reduced movement with my last this time last year and they never offered me a scan 🙈 just checked the heart rate which always ended up being ok during pregnancy. I did have an extra scan due to placenta placement though

Okay at my 20w they said everything was the size it should be so I probably won’t have another scan I’m assuming

Glad your 20 week scan went well. Yes the standard for NHS is 2 scans - dating between 11-14 weeks and anatomy scan between 18-21 weeks. Some hospital trusts do a 36 week scan. The reasons for additional scans could include the following scenarios: -Midwife measures bump and decides it is too under/over (even though this is a very inaccurate/old school way to measure) and refers you for a scan to check babies growth -At 20 week scan something falls into high/low growth that they want to monitor -Around 36 weeks if baby is sitting breech, might be referred for a scan -Gestational Diabetes usually also gets extra scan to check in baby because links to bigger baby and possible issues -Consultant led and referred for a scan -Any concerning symptoms may refer for a scan If there was reduced movements they hook you up to listen to heartbeat. Not usual for a scan. So for the vast majority it’s just the two scans.

I will add as someone who’s had extra scans in my last pregnancy they can sometimes cause more anxiety and by the time it’s the third trimester baby is so big you aren’t really seeing the usual baby profile, just bits & pieces. Unless there is a need to check on something there isn’t a huge point to having them for the sake of. I felt way more connected just feeling baby move and kick. Some people do go for a private 4D scan.

No, unless there are concerns. In my first pregnancy I got an extra scan in third trimester and this was a growth scan as midwife had measured that baby’s growth had slowed (these measurements are pretty inaccurate though). Some others may have scans for other risk factors. But typically you only get the two scans under the nhs at 12 and 20 weeks.

You don't get anymore scans than just 2 from the NHS if you're not considered high risk

I’m high risk and will get them every 2 weeks from 28 weeks x
