How are people affording Nursery?!

Just...in general bit of a whinge. The whole system seems ridiculous. Only want to send her 2 days a week, but now I'm having to work extra days to pay for her to go and roped in (very luckily, grandparents) to help. I'm working just to send her, when I'd rather just be at home with her myself as I do quite like her. Then there's the 'extras' as government funding only covers 'care'. And then everywhere seems to have a minimum amount of time they can sign up. Just making it impossible to actually afford. Whinge. Whinge.

Extras are a nursery specific thing. Mine don't charge any (as far as I know) Are they spreading it across the year. If so it works out at 11 per week. I found working 3 days and her attending 2.5 was affordable (with our incomes) and now the funding has kicked in for 15 hours. Our nursery doesn't spread it out so I have worked out myself what it works out as per week so when holidays come we have enough in the tax free childcare account. Do you use tax free childcare as well?

Completely understand your winge.... I'm sending my girl because she is unbelievably social (No idea where she gets from 🤣 because we are not and Id much rather stay at home with her) and most of my friends kids are much older.... I don't need to work... but now I've gone back to work part time to pay just for the nursery and by doing this I've had to work an extra days and hours to cover the cost...also have a wonderful grandparent that has her for me on other days... it's all a catch 22.

In Scotland we don’t have any free hours for under 3’s (unless you’re on low income/UC) 😬 I literally work to send her to nursery part time. It’s brutal.

Me and my partner both work to send her to nursery. We’re both working full time Monday- Friday We don’t have any family close enough to have our little girl so is in full time it’s crazy that all we earn goes back to pay for nursery

We’re similar I hate it I work in a nursery so literally earning money looking after other people kids and paying someone else to look after mine 😮‍💨

How much is the monthly bill? I send my daughter 2 days a week and the bill comes out to around £507. It’s still a lot but I feel quite fortunate to have found a setting near me with these fees. I have 3 kids and by the time my daughter was ready for nursery my son had left and gone to school. And by the time my current baby is ready for nursery my daughter will be eligible for 3 year funding but I’ll still have to pay something for it I suppose as I was her funding stretched over so she can go in holidays as well. Looking on it now it’s a miracle I’ve put 2 kids through nursery as we aren’t well off at all 😖 x

We've chosen a council run preschool setting, he's starting in November so fingers crossed 🤞 they are alot cheaper than privately run nurseries!
