Homeschooling

My husband and I don’t want our kids to go to public school, and classical catholic schools are hard to find and also expensive 🫠 so I’m more interested in homeschooling now, how has your experience been with multiple kids? That seems so daunting to me. And how did you keep them involved in the church/ with other kids?

Following! Also interested in homeschooling a mix of neurodivergent (autism) and neurotypical kids!!

I attempted preschool for a year before sending my daughter to private school. I loved the Seton program for academics, and it was very organized and user friendly. My daughter is well ahead of her peers in school. She loved it, but being on bedrest for pregnancy and having a chaotic toddler running around made it really difficult to give my daughter my full attention. The Good and the Beautiful is also a popular curriculum some of my friends use. I think if all of my kids were 3/4+, it would be much easier to homeschool them all. Our church does Catholic School House co-op, and that’s been great for my friends. Logistically and socially, it would not have been a good fit for our family. As far as involved in the church, we do daily Mass, go to the church’s moms group/play groups, and also go to KidStrong and participate library activities so they are out in the community :)

As someone who was homeschooled I think it’s fine as long as you know what you’re doing and you can make sure they develop social skills and mix with other kids a lot still. I massively missed out on socialising because of it and developed huge anxiety around it

@Angelique @Colette As someone who has not been homeschooled, doesn’t know anyone who has been, it’s such a grey area. And it sounds like a good option for our family, but as someone who did not grow up catholic and is new to the faith, I was hoping being in school would be a huge help with that. And also I have a learning disability (dyslexia) so teaching my kids for their future is scary to me because I really don’t want to mess anything up and affect their future…. It’s just so much to think about but luckily we have some more time… thank you for the thoughts and sharing

@Morgan I have done public, Catholic, and homeschool. There are pros and cons to each! I think as long as there is a solid faith/moral foundation at home, your kiddos will thrive wherever ❤️

@Morgan Hi Morgan! As an elementary teacher myself, I can attest that teaching kids one on one (like in homeschooling) is the optimal way! Every homeschooling family looks different, and that’s actually ideal! Every child is different and has different needs! Have you heard of Mother Of divine Grace? I haven’t looked at their pricing yet, but basically they are homeschooling curriculum & support. Mrs Berquist (founder) has developed an excellent curriculum that I intend to use myself when my babe is older. They also have counseling calls with more experienced homeschool moms, and online classes to supplement if needed.

There are also some Catholic homeschool co-ops available. Something like that could provide you with any support you might need. The way a co-op works is you home school your children and are the main teacher but one to two days a week your child is in a classroom type setting with other kids and teachers.
