Jury duty

Has anyone managed to get out of jury duty due to childcare? My son is 1, my partner has a health condition so can’t look after him himself. No family members can help and I can’t afford to put him to a child minder (not that I would put him with someone he doesn’t know). He goes to nursery 2 days a week, I’m in the office then, and the other 3 days I work from home so I can look after him. I don’t know how long the trial will last, there is no way I can afford to pay for a full week. I also go on holiday the week after so if it does run over I would have to miss that!

Show your support

I was called when my little one was 2 months old. I told them I was breastfeeding and they excused me and took me off the list for the next 5 years. Phone the number on your letter and explain your situation. Good luck 🫶

I just said I had no childcare and that my family lived outwith the area and I had no family support etc. explain the situation with your partner too and how he can’t watch him independently! I’ve been excused twice now

I think one of the justifications for excusal is pre-booked travel, so a copy of your holiday reservation might be enough. Think there is an email to send in pics.

Nope I was told to arrange private childcare and then claim whatever expenses I could. Luckily there was enough people in the ballot a few days before so I got a call asking if I still wanted to be excused.

I just emailed them explaining my situation (breastfeeding and can’t be away from baby for long period) and they emailed back the next day that im off the hook ☺️

Like the others have said I would tell them you breastfeed ! But also I had to get excused from jury duty once for having a holiday booked and they never questioned it. I went to selection and showed the guy my booking confirmation which was dated from before I was called and he let me off straight away

Yes I got excused due to childcare
